How to lubricate the gearbox of an angle grinder
Sooner or later, the grinder requires maintenance. During this period, a preventive replacement of the tool gearbox lubricant is carried out. There is a huge number of lubricants of domestic and foreign production on the market. When choosing, you should focus on the manufacturer’s recommendations and not engage in amateur activities.

Lubricants overview
When purchasing, read the instructions and what the developer says. Most often, the documents indicate the article number or name of the product used for this type of device. To avoid problems with the operation of the tool, it is better to purchase the recommended product.
If desired, it is easy to do the lubrication yourself. But in this case, it is impossible to make a claim under the warranty, and in the event of a breakdown, you will only have yourself to blame.
Domestic production
Among the lubricants developed in Russia, it is worth highlighting Nanotek MetalPlak Electra. Designed for devices operating under high loads, it has a high-quality composition for ideal rotation of the angle grinder.
No less popular domestic products are Tsiatim-221 and Shrus. But when purchasing such products, additional preparation will be required. Rather, they can be classified as homemade compositions.
Foreign production
If the grinder is branded and expensive, pay attention to foreign consumables.For example, for Bosch tools, lubricants of the same name are available for sale. The product is packaged in small 65 g tubes and is called “gear lubricant”. In the store you will never be mistaken about what exactly to take from the shelf.
Grease the grinder gearbox
The moving parts of angle grinders are most susceptible to wear. Gears and bearings are coated with oil from the manufacturer. But over time, it dries out and wears out, and the parts begin to come into contact with each other, which leads to serious damage.
Features of lubricants for angle grinders
Oil material for grinders must have the following characteristics:
- has no solid particles;
- turns into a liquid state at a temperature of at least 120 °C;
- does not absorb moisture and protects parts from corrosion;
- viscous to gently envelop the gearbox parts.
Viscosity is selected according to the international classifier. The more mobile and powerful the tool, the more liquid the oil is chosen.
Grease Packing Procedure
To ensure proper use of the oil, the gearbox is opened. Then the gears and all parts of the tool are cleaned of old lubricant. This is explained by the poor performance of angle grinders in such conditions. Afterwards they apply a new one and check the quality of work. Assemble the gearbox and turn on the tool.
When is a lubricant change required?
The average time for changing consumables is 1 year. This condition is relevant if the device is operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, without overheating. With increased work intensity, the shift period is reduced to six months.
How to properly remove old grease
To thoroughly wash off the old compound, treat the gears in solvent or work thoroughly with a rag.When using gasoline or thinner, all parts should be thoroughly dried before reinstalling.
You should not install freshly washed gears into the gearbox. When mixed with the new lubricant, gasoline and solvent will impair the performance of the device. The same thing will happen when mixing old and new lubricants.
