How to connect a router to a TV
Until recently, televisions performed one function - they reproduced a television signal. But with the development of technology, the capabilities of TV receivers have expanded significantly. Modern models are equipped with the Smart-TV function, which allows the device to access the Internet. To do this, just connect the router to the TV receiver.

Why do you need a router?
A router is a device that receives an incoming Internet signal and transmits it to external devices. It connects all home network subscribers and provides them with Internet access.
The TV does not have this function; it can only receive an incoming signal using a cable or Wi-Fi module. To be able to access the network, it requires an external device - a router.
REFERENCE! Many users believe that in order to access the Internet, they need to purchase a device that is designed specifically to work with a TV. In fact, absolutely any router will do.
If the router has already been purchased and is in use, you will not need to buy an additional device. However, if there is a large load on the router, then it is worth purchasing a more expensive option. Otherwise, problems may arise when watching the video.
How to properly connect a router to a TV
The TV receiver is connected to the router in the same way as other devices.This can be done in several ways: using a LAN cable, via a wireless network or through a set-top box.
By cable
Connecting using a LAN wire is the easiest option. However, this is only possible if the Internet provider uses the PPPoE or L2TP protocols.
For almost all models, the connection procedure will be the same.
In order to connect TV to the router you will need a cable. The LAN cable that comes with the router is short, so it is advisable to purchase a cord of the required length separately. This can be done at any electrical goods store.
Connection diagram:
- one end of the LAN cable must be plugged into the corresponding socket on the router;
- the second end must be installed in the connector on the body of the TV receiver - it is similar to that located on the system unit or laptop;
- After the devices are connected, you need to make settings.
Setting:
- you need to open the Settings menu and find the “Network Settings” item;
- if the cable is connected correctly, a corresponding notification will appear - “Cable connected”;
- Next, you should go to the submenu and select “Start” there.
Then you can go online and view the necessary information.
In some models of TV receivers, you must additionally indicate the option for connecting to the Internet. This requires:
- go to the “Settings” menu and find the corresponding “Connection option” item in it;
- set the value to “Cable” and click “Next”;
- when using a static version of the IP address, it must be specified at this setup stage;
- if the IP address is dynamic, the TV receiver will automatically connect to the network.
Via Wi-Fi
This connection option has an undeniable advantage - it allows you to get rid of unnecessary wires. The main condition for connection is the presence of a Wi-Fi module in the TV receiver. If it is not available, you will need to purchase a special USB adapter.
ATTENTION! When purchasing a Wi-Fi USB adapter, you need to make sure that it is compatible with the TV model you are using!
Setting:
- you should open the “Settings” menu;
- find the item “Network settings” in it;
- select “Connection method” and specify “Wireless network” - the device will begin searching for available wireless connections;
- From the list of detected options, select the one you need, and then enter the password for the Wi-Fi network.
When using a dynamic address, the TV will immediately connect to the Internet. Otherwise, you will need to enter the IP address.
Via set-top box
Not all TV models have a built-in Wi-Fi module and Smart-TV function. However, even such devices can be connected to the Internet. To do this, you will need to purchase a special Smart attachment. These devices run on the Android operating system and are specially optimized for working with TVs.
The connection is made using an HDMI cable.
Connection diagram:
- The set-top box is connected to the router using a LAN cord;
- one end of the HDMI cable is connected to the Smart adapter socket, and the other to the socket on the TV body.
After all three devices are connected, an image will appear on the TV receiver screen.
Further setup of the TV is performed in the same way as on a regular smartphone or tablet. For convenience, you can use a wireless keyboard and mouse.
When connecting TV to a router via a set-top box, errors may occur that can be easily resolved. This is done like this:
- The first step is to reboot the devices;
- if this does not help, then you need to go to the device menu and find the “Reset Menu”;
- You will need to enter a PIN code - usually 0000;
- wait until the reset procedure is completed and reinstall.
If all else fails, you should update the software on your TV.. This can be done through the corresponding menu - “Software Update”.
Connecting a TV receiver to the router is quite simple. Each of the described methods allows you to do this with a minimum of effort. However, not all of them can provide a constant and stable Internet connection. If you occasionally have problems with speed, then you should use a cable. It guarantees uninterrupted signal transmission.
