DMZ - what is it in the router?

A person who purchases a router should know its characteristics and features. Of course, the user is provided with a wide range of wifi-related opportunities. But in this article we will analyze the specifics of one unfamiliar service, namely DMZ.

DMZ - what is it?

The abbreviation is the full name of Demilitarized Zone, which means demilitarized zone. It contains servers that are accessible to the internal and external networks. Moreover, along with this, the home part is completely closed via a network device. Consequently, no changes in its work are observed.

In the world of modern technology, most devices are equipped with this function. Thus, in a private network, the equipment has all possible ports open. So it is possible to interface with internal resources, but this does not guarantee security. Most often, DMZ is used to connect the Internet to video surveillance cameras. Due to this, a path to the unit is organized in a similar local line.

Purpose and use

After the segment is activated, ports in a certain zone will be accessible via a trusted address. This ensures optimal protection. So in the event of a fight on a public IP, the damage will be reduced to a minimum.

Accordingly, when the user adds a DMZ to the required network node to which the additional device is attached, it will be displayed as an object from the external network. And it, in turn, is directly connected to the World Wide Web. In a situation where other devices are operated in an identical space, their performance will not change.

Attention! To increase security, it is recommended to create a separate network. This solution will be especially useful for large companies that value their own information. Additionally, it makes sense to use a secondary router to accomplish the same goal.

In any case, the basic functionality will be determined by reliably configured parameters. We will discuss below how to install them correctly.

Setting up DMZ on the router

Before starting the main process, it is advisable to contact your provider and make sure that the Internet source receives a “white” IP code. This condition is significant, since if it is not met, the approach from the global environment will not be implemented.

Reference! You usually have to pay extra for this service, however, there are still manufacturers who provide external IP for free.

Setting a Static IP Address

In order to achieve the desired result, you must first change the static address on your personal computer, otherwise it will be impossible to add a DMZ. Therefore, to do this you need to perform the following manipulations:

  • First, it is important to go to the “network connections” folder. There you need to find the “connection” section. With one click of the right mouse button, you can open “properties”.
  • Then you can correct the indicators in the regulation of the Internet protocol TCP/IP.So, knowing the interface code, you will have to indicate it in the field called “gateway”.
  • You can come up with a number yourself for the “subnet mask” line.

Reference! The last number used must be 0.

  • A computer number can also be made up of an invented set of numbers.
  • Finally, all that remains is to save the received information by pressing the “OK” key.

Thus, after adjusting the PC, you need to move on to changing the router values.

Setting up the router

Since the function itself is disabled by default, it must be enabled. To do this, you will need to complete the following steps depending on your device model:

  • If you have TP-Link, then you need to open a window called “forwarding”. Then, in it you can find the DMZ line.
  • If you are using Asus, the tab you need has the appropriate name.
  • D-Link differs from previous options - the “firewall” section.

Settings

  • After you have entered the settings, you need to check the box next to “enable”.
  • Below you can find the “Node ID—DMZ Address” field. In each device model, this aspect may be called different variations. For example, it is possible to encounter “visible station address.” One way or another, it is advisable to enter the static number of the operating equipment.
  • Now you can save the changes and proceed to reboot the router. In this case, other programs will function in their original mode.

Settings

Attention! As a result, everything that previously did not function without the Internet will work.

However, despite the fact that using the described function greatly simplifies interaction with the programs you need, open access to the PC is provided. This means, in no other way, that there is a high probability of network attacks. Therefore, it is highly recommended to additionally install antivirus programs. In addition, today the user can use an alternative in this matter - UPNP. In general, its application has the same meaning, but it provides more opportunities.
