How to set up Internet on a laptop
It is impossible to imagine operating a PC or laptop without access to the Internet. There are several ways to get constant access to the Internet and at the same time ensure high speeds of receiving and transmitting data - each user can choose the one that suits him. There are two main types of access to the World Wide Web: wired and wireless.

How to set up a wired Internet connection on a laptop
Access via a wired connection has proven itself among users as the most stable.
This type of Internet connection will be most relevant for those who are used to downloading large files over the network or who work remotely. The wired method ensures stable operation of the Internet, which allows you to access the necessary resources 24 hours a day.
Let us examine in detail all the intricacies of providing wired access. There are 2 types of it:
- Using an optical cable.
- Internet access via ADSL technology.
Setting up each connection method has different nuances.
By cable
To set up any type of connection, you will need to go to the control panel, then select the “Network and Internet” menu, and then open the “Change adapter settings” tab. In the dialog box that appears, set the option to automatically obtain an IP address. If the instructions issued by the provider require manual entry, we do it ourselves.
If your provider requires a connection via a VPN system, you must perform the following sequence of actions:
- Open network settings, select "Create a new connection."
- Select the “Connect to workstation” column in the menu.
- Specify the connection type: “VPN”.
- When asked by the system whether it is worth setting up a connection, you should answer by clicking “Delay” with the left mouse button.
- Next, you need to enter the data issued by the provider. It is better to disable encryption settings.
Let's move on to using the Internet; to do this, left-click on the network icon in the lower right corner and select the desired VPN connection.
In cases where the provider provides cable Internet via PPPoE, you should:
- Start by creating a new connection by clicking on the “Internet Connection” column.
- Click on the "Broadband, DSL or Cable" tab.
- In the window that opens, enter the data from the documentation from the provider. Don’t forget to click on the “Remember data” checkbox.
By ADSL
To connect via ADSL you need a modem. Communication with the World Wide Web will be via a telephone cable. The disadvantages of this method are the rather low speed due to the outdated connection system.
The main telephone line is included in a splitter, separating the connection into telephone and Internet. Next, using a cable, you need to connect to the modem via the LAN connector. And from it you can connect to the laptop via the WAN connector. This connection is suitable for remote villages where wireless communication is poor and there is no fiber optic cable.
Wireless Internet connection on a laptop
For stable and high-speed Internet operation, two well-known wireless connection methods are also suitable:
- Via Wi-Fi.
- Using mobile internet.
Via Wi-Fi
Connecting via Wi-Fi is only possible if you have a module in your laptop or using a special USB Wi-Fi adapter. A Wi-Fi router differs from a modem in its ability to connect several gadgets to the network at once. It is possible to set a password to protect against unauthorized use of your traffic. When purchasing a Wi-Fi router, the instructions for it contain a factory password and login, which can be changed in the device settings if desired.
To access the Wi-Fi router, you must select it in the list of wireless networks and enter the correct password for authorization.
For the router to work correctly, two important conditions must be met:
- Carefully choose the place where the router will stand.
- Provide it with uninterrupted power for correct operation without failures.
There are two types of routers for working over a wireless Wi-Fi network:
- wired routers;
- wireless routers.
The first type of device works on the principle of a modem and directly receives the Internet via a cable, after which it distributes it via a Wi-Fi connection over a limited distance. The speed on this connection is slightly lower than with a cable connection, but is quite stable.
Wireless Wi-Fi routers run on SIM cards and provide much lower connection speeds; in addition, mobile communications reduce the stability of Internet access. The advantage is the ability to work on a laptop anywhere, thanks to wireless communication.
Via mobile internet
For mobile connection of a laptop to the Network, modems with a built-in SIM card or a telephone connected via USB to the laptop are used.
The modem can be purchased at the communication store of the corresponding operator - choose the one that suits you best. Find out whether the desired Internet provider fully provides your area with Internet. After the purchase, all that remains is to perform the first launch and installation of the software.
Setting up a mobile modem is very simple:
- Plug the modem into the USB port on your laptop.
- Wait for the drivers and software for your modem to be installed.
- After installation, a launch dialog box will open.
- Enter the authorization data that was given to you at the communication salon, and then check the box: “Remember” so as not to re-enter them each time.
After that, wait until you are connected to the network.
In order to access the Internet via a smartphone, you need to:
- Connect your smartphone to your laptop using a USB cable.
- In your phone settings, find the tab responsible for mobile connections.
- Select USB modem mode.
- Wait for synchronization and start successfully using the Internet.
This connection has a low speed, but does not require additional costs for purchasing a device to access the Internet. The user only has to control his traffic, since most operators provide a small amount of it for mobile phones.
In general, connecting a laptop to the Internet is a fairly easy task even for a novice user. It can be solved without contacting a service center or involving a specialist.
