How to switch sound to headphones on a laptop
Not every laptop manufacturer provides headphone support in their devices. Everyone has a headset jack, but the sound output through the built-in speakers or through headphones is not always switched, it depends on the headset model. It happens that the laptop initially works properly with external devices, but after they are turned off, it refuses to switch to the speakers.
How to switch headphones on a laptop
If the laptop does not provide sound output to the headphones after they are connected, or does not switch back to the speakers after disconnecting the headset, then in both cases the solution to the problem is as follows:
- Click the “Start” button in the lower left part of the screen, and select “Control Panel” in the right part of the new window that opens. In Windows 10, just enter the required section in the search.
- A new window with icons will open. You should select the image that corresponds to the “Hardware and Sound” section.
- A menu will open, divided into thematic niches. In the one called “Sound”, select “Manage sound devices”.
- A small window will open where you can set the default device. Further actions depend on the preferences of the owner - if you want to use a headset, then you need to switch the toggle switch to them, if speakers or speakers, then, accordingly, to the other side. If any device has problems, the system will notify the user about it.
As an alternative, you can use third-party utilities. These programs will allow you to customize the sound yourself, apply effects to it, and fix glitches. But the Windows system also has its own tools for editing the output sound. In order to use a standard but multifunctional tool, you need to enter “Realtek HD Manager” in the Start menu search. The new window that opens contains many settings suitable not only for headphones, but also for a variety of speaker configurations. The number of audio channels is adjustable regardless of the actual number of outputs, and there is also a large selection of effects.
