Headphone frequency range

Many headphone manufacturers indicate the frequency range in the description. In this case, the user expects that they will reproduce the sound within the stated interval and the wider it is, the better.

What is the frequency range of headphones

Sound quality depends on the frequency range. The human ear is capable of distinguishing sounds from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. At the beginning of the interval there are low-frequency sounds, and at the end - high-frequency sounds. The main task of headphones is to reproduce it correctly.

The audio device should not produce extraneous sounds in the form of wheezing or hissing. You can evaluate a device’s ability to reproduce high-quality sound by its amplitude-frequency response (AFC). This indicator is displayed as a graph of volume versus frequency. The straighter it is, the clearer the reproduced sound.

A single parameter does not in any way characterize the sound of headphones. Different device models cannot be compared with each other if the interval is indicated without deviations. In more expensive models of audio devices, manufacturers indicate the frequency response. For example, a value of 20 Hz-20 kHz+-5 dB means that there will be no valleys or strong peaks throughout the entire interval.

Which option to choose

The optimal frequency range for headphones is in the range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. However, many manufacturers specifically try to expand this parameter. There are audio devices with an interval of 10 Hz-25 kHz.How to understand this, you ask? Of course, a person is not able to hear the entire spectrum of sound. On the one hand, manufacturers want to attract customers in this way, but on the other hand, this means that the final declines in the amplitude-frequency response will begin no earlier than at these far boundaries.

NOTE. Widening this parameter - This is a marketing ploy.

The size of the frequency range cannot be the main criterion in choosing headphones and other audio devices. A single parameter indicates only the interval, and not the linearity of the frequency response. Based on the above values, you cannot select an audio device; you can only exclude a low-quality one. It is better to determine the character of the sound manually, using a specific composition.
