Types of monitor connectors
A monitor is a device designed to display information on a screen. Which is transmitted using a cable connection through connection ports (connectors).

What can you connect your monitor to via cable?
A monitor is one of the components of a personal computer. When connecting a monitor, it is not recommended to connect old type connectors with new types of interface. This connection degrades the transmitted signal. In general, the connection procedure is as follows:
- A suitable cable for connection is selected;
- The required extension is set in the screen settings.
Reference: To connect different types of connectors, use adapters, as well as converters to transmit high-quality images.
In cases where a second monitor is connected, or connected to a laptop, in addition to the general connection procedure, it is necessary to set the desired mode in the screen parameters. The following modes exist:
- Basic mode. This is when the image is displayed on one of the monitors;
- Duplicate screens. The monitor screens display the same information;
- Multi-screen mode. In this mode, each monitor has independent desktops, i.e. Different information may be displayed on the screens.
The monitor can also be used as a TV. To do this, you need to connect additional equipment in the form of a TV tuner.Which is a receiver of television signals, as well as providing the ability to view them.
Another way to use a monitor like a TV is to install a decoder. The installation procedure consists of connecting a special board with a built-in video signal decoder to receive and transmit a digital or analog signal.
Reference: The installation of the decoder must be trusted to a specialist.
Cable selection
The quality of the displayed information directly depends not only on the correct connection, but also on the correct selection of the cable. To make the right choice you need:
- Choose only shielded cables. They allow you to reduce the negative impact on the signal from other electronic devices;
- Don't skimp when choosing a cable. As a rule, the lower the price, the lower the quality and speed of signal transmission;
- The connectors must have gold-plated contacts. Such contacts reduce the resistance between the cable and the connector, and they are also more resistant to corrosion.
What types are there and what are they for?
The main connectors for connection are:
- VGA. It is a trapezoidal connector that allows you to transmit only a video signal. This type of connector officially supports images with a resolution of 1280x1024 with a refresh rate of 75 Hz. At higher enlargements, image quality may deteriorate. It is being built into video cards less and less often. This type of connector has adapters for other types of connectors (HDMI, Display Port, DVI).
- DVI. It can only transmit images with a maximum resolution of 1920x1200, but when using the dual-channel transmission mode, 2560x1600 is achieved.It is divided into three types of transmission: analog (DVI-A), digital (DVI-D), analog and digital (DVI-D).
Reference: All DVI connectors are fully compatible with each other.
- HDMI. Belonging to the modern type of transmission is considered the most popular. There are three types of connection: micro (Type D), mini (Type C) and full size (Type A). Capable of transmitting not only a video signal, but also an audio signal to a computer. Supports formats with maximum expansion, as well as images with 3D effects.
- DisplayPort. It was designed as a high-performance interface to replace VGA and DVI. The characteristics are similar to HDMI.
