What is the difference between an MFP and a printer?

Thanks to technological progress, many technical devices have appeared in the human arsenal that greatly simplify his life. Some, such as MFPs, even combine the functions of several devices, which is especially popular with modern and always busy people. However, despite this, many still prefer to purchase office equipment separately.

Differences between a printer and an MFP

Printers and MFPs can be used both to serve the needs of large office teams and for home use. There is a huge selection of models from different manufacturers, differing in technical characteristics, dimensions and price.

MFP functionality

The abbreviation “MFP” stands for multifunctional device that combines the functions of a scanner, printer, copier and fax. The simplest models combine only 2 functions, while more expensive devices support all of the above, and even more.

MFP

Multifunctional devices are divided into laser, inkjet and LED. They can print images in color and black and white.

The main advantages of use include:

  1. Compactness. Small-sized devices are conveniently placed on desktops near personal computers.
  2. Economical. One toner cartridge is enough to operate one laser MFP.
  3. Price.Compared to a printer, an MFP is much more expensive, but if you compare its price with the cost of the devices it contains, the benefits are obvious.

Among the disadvantages characteristic of multifunctional devices are:

  • slow copying;
  • The failure of one component entails the failure of other components.

Printer functionality

Printers have long been known to the world as devices with which you can print text documents, photographs, advertising business cards and other paper products. In addition, there are devices capable of creating three-dimensional models, printing decorations for cakes and pastries, applying images to fabrics, etc.

Printer

Based on the printing method, devices are divided into color and black and white. Based on the method of applying ink prints to paper, inkjet, laser, heat-sublimation and other types are distinguished.

The advantages of use include:

  • fast printing;
  • ease of use and maintenance;
  • low power consumption;
  • possibility of two-sided printing in some models;
  • low noise during operation;
  • compactness.

Among the disadvantages are:

  • slight radiation that comes from laser devices;
  • high cost of some consumables;
  • Possibility of reduced print quality if ink runs out.

Fundamental difference

differences

The main difference between an MFP and a printer is that the former can not only print texts or images. Multifunctional devices can also scan, photoxer and receive (send) a fax. The printer can only transfer the image from a computer or flash drive to paper. Besides:

  • printers in most cases are equipped with several paper feed points, while their opponents have one;
  • If we talk about the speed of processing print jobs from a computer, then it is much lower for MFPs;
  • Repairing a printer is much cheaper than repairing a device that combines many functions.

Those who want to acquire equipment for their home need to decide what functions will be assigned to it. For rare printing of photos or text, an inkjet model is quite suitable. For schoolchildren or students, an MFP will be more useful.
