How to turn on the mouse on a laptop keyboard

An alternative to the usual mouse in a laptop or netbook is a touchpad - TouchPad. Convenient for autonomous use of the device (for example, when traveling), when an external mouse will be a burden. In some cases, this panel does not respond to commands. Let's consider possible causes of failures and ways to solve the problem. So how to activate a touch mouse? Let's move from simple to complex methods.

Reboot the system

Regardless of the installed system, brand, model of laptop, this is the first place to start. The system may have experienced a short-term glitch that will disappear after a reboot.

If possible, connect an external mouse - it will be more convenient, if not, then the following options are possible:

  1. Using the Win key (or checkbox) will bring up the Start menu.
  2. Use the left-right-up-down arrows to select “Reboot”. Press "Enter" and wait for the command to complete.
  3. Call up a special menu using the combination “Ctrl+Alt+Delete”. Using the arrows, go to “Shutdown” and press “Enter”.
  4. Using the “Alt+F4” keys, reboot from the desktop.
  5. In the window that opens, go to “Shutdown”.

If the simplest methods do not help, then to eliminate the problem we move on to more serious ones.

Hotkey combination

You can enable/disable the touchpad in most laptops using a specific key combination. Usually this is the “Fn” key + one of the top row keys F1-F12. For the most common laptop models it is as follows:

  • Gigabyte-Fn+F1;
  • Sony-Fn+F1;
  • Fujitsu-Fn+F4;
  • Samsung-Fn+F5;
  • Dell-Fn+F5;
  • Toshiba-Fn+F5;
  • Lenovo-Fn+F6;
  • Acer-Fn+F7;
  • ASUS-Fn+F9.

Hewlett-Packard devices do not have such a “magic” combination. Engineers have allocated a key for this. If the model is older and does not have a button, you can perform this task by double-clicking (press and hold) on the left corner of the touchpad.

In addition to HP devices, some manufacturers allow you to turn on the touchpad with one special key, by pressing a recess, an insignificant or quite noticeable point located next to the panel. A special designation serves as a guide.

Purpose

A hotkey combination is an extremely useful function that will significantly speed up the process of work, navigation, and access to folders and files. The destination is configured through a special dialog box. You can customize the mouse in detail specifically for yourself, your tasks and preferences.

But there are already configured default key combinations (which can always be changed if desired). They are the same for all devices. For example, several standard combinations:

  • The “NumLock” key turns on/off the laptop keyboard;
  • By pressing keys, with the exception of “0” and “5”, you can control the cursor;
  • You can speed up/slow down its movement using the “Shift” / “Ctrl” buttons;
  • Lock the laptop “Win+L”, launch the Explorer call “Win+E”, context menu “Shift+F10”.

IMPORTANT.The keyboard layout (language selection) does not matter when using hot keys. The command will be executed for any of them.

Special Features

Incorrect setting of a special feature is one of the reasons why the TouchPad does not respond to commands. In this case, for example, the settings state that when an additional mouse is connected, the panel will automatically turn off.

We'll tell you how to enable the built-in mouse on a laptop, if it's all about the settings. I'll have to check. Go to “Control Panel” - “Hardware and Sound” - “Mouse”. Go to “Properties” – “Pointer Options”. Check/uncheck the box next to “Turn off the touchpad when a mouse is connected.”

If this function is not active (there is no checkbox), proceed to further verification.

BIOS

If after the previous steps the panel still does not respond to commands, it may be disabled in the BIOS settings.

IMPORTANT. It’s not difficult, but if words don’t mean anything to you, then it’s better to ask a specialist to do it. By changing the settings, you can get much more global problems than a panel that turns off.

Restart your computer, press “F2” or “Delete”. Enter settings. Find "Internal Pointing Device". Next to it should be “Enable”.

Installing/reinstalling drivers

Correct operation of a laptop is impossible without the correct software. It is usually installed when purchasing or installing the system, but sometimes you have to install it yourself.

One of the possible reasons why the problem arose is that the driver has crashed and is outdated. We recommend finding it on the manufacturer's official website.

IMPORTANT. Before installing drivers, pay attention to whether they are suitable for your device, whether the bit depth is the same, and the version of Windows OS.

Drivers will be suitable for the device if at least one of several parameters matches. Although a complete coincidence would be more correct. Then you can guarantee the flawless operation of the device.

After installation, you need to reboot the laptop. Check the functionality of the touchpad. Everything is fine - you did a great job, you completed the task on your own, the problem remains - perhaps it is a mechanical failure.

In Windows 10, the names of sections and tabs have been slightly changed. In order to complete the previous steps, define special functions, check the driver version, or move on to other settings, you need to complete 4 steps:

  1. Open “Settings”, go to the “Start” menu, left-click on properties (gear image).
  2. Let's stop at "Devices".
  3. We are interested in the section “Touchpad” - “Related parameters”.
  4. Open the “Hardware” tab and look for the properties of the desired mouse.

Physical defect

If you have done all of the above, but still do not understand how to activate the touch mouse, there may be a physical flaw. This could be a breakdown of the panel itself, a breakage or oxidation of the contact. In any case, you should turn to professionals - here your knowledge will not be enough.
