How to connect a mouse to a laptop

Mouse and laptop.Despite the fact that a mouse is not a mandatory attribute included with a laptop, since the same functions are successfully performed by a touchpad, many users agree that it is much more convenient. This is especially true for graphic designers and fans of computer games. The mouse is inexpensive and easy to connect and install, usually without requiring additional accessories.

How to connect a wired mouse to a laptop

To do this, there is a USB connector in the laptop, to which the mouse is connected, just like a flash drive, phone data cable, etc.

REFERENCE! Some users use older models with a PS/2 connector, for which you must additionally purchase a USB adapter with the appropriate input.

A few seconds after connection, driver installation starts automatically. As a rule, it does not last long, so you just have to wait for it to end. Most often, this installation occurs only once, during the first connection; in the future it will not be required, since all the necessary components are already downloaded.

ATTENTION! If the laser LED on the mouse is working and the cursor is not moving, restarting the laptop may help. If this does not work, try connecting the device to a different USB port.

How to connect a wireless mouse

Such a device is much more convenient and mobile both in use and during transportation. Based on the principle of communication with a laptop, it can be:

  • adapter - the only drawback of such a mouse is that it only runs on batteries, which need to be regularly charged or new ones purchased;
  • bluetooth - this method is much more convenient because it frees up the USB port.

Via adapter

An adapter is a small transmitter that looks like a flash drive, which is connected to a USB connector in the same way. Just as in the case of a wired mouse, when you first connect, the automatic driver installer is activated, and for further work after connecting, you will only need to wait a few seconds, depending on the speed of the laptop. After this, move the mouse to see if the cursor moves.

It happens that a wireless mouse comes with an installation disk. Then you should start working by placing it in the drive and launching the installation program through “My Computer”. The “Installation Wizard” will open, in which you will need to go through several steps, clicking the “Next” button and changing the default settings if necessary, after which the components will begin downloading. When finished, you can take out the disk and connect the adapter to the connector.

ATTENTION! There is often a switch on the bottom of the mouse, so be sure to check that it is in the "On" position. On other models there may be a “Connect” button, which is pressed after connecting to the laptop to establish a connection with it.

Sometimes a necessary driver may be missing, in which case the program may offer to download it from the Internet. Accordingly, this will require a connection.

If you did everything correctly, but the mouse still does not work, try the following options:

  • change the battery (while making sure the polarity is correct);
  • reconnect the adapter;
  • check the display of the new device in the manager, in the “HID Devices” section, its name should contain the name of the mouse model;
  • connect to another computer.

Via Bluetooth

In order to connect such a mouse to a laptop, follow the path “My Computer” - “Properties” - “Device Manager” - “Bluetooth Radio Modules”. Right-click on the required module and select “Engage”.

Next, turn on the mouse and follow the path “Start” - “Control Panel” - “Add a device”. Windows will search for new devices, including the mouse. After this, you just have to click the “Next” button in the installer until all the necessary drivers are downloaded. Now all you have to do is wait for the message “Device driver installation completed successfully” to appear, after which you can use the mouse.

Comments and feedback:

What needed to be found, among many sites, is clear even for those who are not experienced. PS/2 is an outdated model (I have had it for more than 5 years) without a USB adapter. Rebooting and switching to other connectors did not lead to results (the laser LED does not work well), I had to buy a new one. THANK YOU!
