Step-by-step process of connecting a keyboard to a PC
First of all, you need to determine the type of device being connected. Currently, there are several types of keyboards, each of which has its own connection characteristics.
The following types of input devices can be connected to modern PCs:
- PS/2;
- USB;
- Bluetooth.
What does the user need to know in order to connect correctly?
Not every keyboard can be connected to a computer. This most often applies to PS/2. The fact is that such a port is available only on stationary PCs. Wearable computers do not have it. It will not be possible to directly connect such a device to such computers. Although you can find a way out of every situation.
But despite everything, you need to understand that not every keyboard can be connected to a specific PC.Sometimes, due to the fact that the system requirements do not meet, this will not be possible.
Using a USB port. USB devices are more common these days. We deal with them most often. How to connect it? Very simple. To do this you need:
- Find a free USB port. Externally it looks like a rectangle. There are several of them on any PC.
- Next you need to connect the keyboard to the PC. After this you need to load the operating system.
- Then wait a while to install the necessary drivers. If the automation fails to install them, you will need to do it manually.
- Drivers can be found on the manufacturer's website, or on the supplied disk. Installation takes no more than a minute.
Wireless connection. Many people know that you can connect wireless computers to a PC, but not everyone knows how to do it. It's not difficult at all.
To do this you need:
- Insert the battery and turn on the device.
- Connect the USB receiver.
Next, install the necessary drivers. Wait for the devices to synchronize. This can be done through the software that comes with the drivers and select the desired model from the list.
The keyboard does not connect to the computer: what to do
There are several main reasons why the computer may not see the keyboard:
- There are no drivers on the PC or they are damaged;
- you need to update the driver version;
- The OS is incompatible with the device;
- there is mechanical damage to the connector;
- equipment malfunction;
- the port is damaged;
- The PC is infected with a virus.
The keyboard is connected, but does not work, the lights are on
If after you have connected the keyboard to the PC and it does not work, but the lights on it are on, this indicates that the drivers are not installed or were installed with an error.
- In order to correct this situation, go to the Control Panel, find the Hardware item there, look for the Keyboards item and remove your model from the list.
- Next, restart your computer.
- It is very possible that after a reboot the system will install the necessary driver on its own.
- If this does not happen, the driver will need to be installed from the disk supplied with the device or downloaded from the manufacturer’s official website.
When connecting the keyboard, the lights come on and off
If, after booting the PC, the lights on the input device come on and go off, then this is normal. This was a check. However, if after this the buttons themselves do not respond, then look at the BIOS settings.
It should have the USB Keyboard - Enabled setting. By default it is disabled. If everything is set correctly in the BIOS, then you need to check whether the USB port is working. Connect the device to a different port, and if possible, check on another PC. If everything is fine everywhere, but the buttons do not respond, it is better to exchange the device itself.
How to connect a keyboard with a round input
PS/2 devices are considered obsolete. Many current users do not even know what to do if such a device falls into their hands. It's actually quite simple:
- We find the PS/2 connector, it is located on the back of the computer and is a round hole, usually marked with green paint.
- Insert the keyboard plug into this connector.
- Next, you need to turn on the PC and wait until it detects the new device.
- The PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports look exactly the same. The only difference is the color of the markings.
- Devices of this type can be connected both with the PC turned off and with it turned on.
With adapter. An old keyboard can also be connected to a modern USB port, although this will require purchasing a special adapter. One end of this adapter is equipped with a PS/2 socket, and on the other side there is a USB port. This is the only way out of such a situation.
If you want to use a modern computer together with an old type device, then you need to:
- Buy a PS/2-USB adapter.
- Place the adapter on the plug.
- Find a free USB port on your computer and connect the computer to the input device.
- Turn on PC.
There are no difficulties. You just need to take into account that the device may not start working immediately. It takes some time for the OS to detect it and install the necessary drivers.
