Joystick test

In some cases, the user needs to check the functionality of the joystick. This should be done not only when purchasing a new gamepad, but also if problems arise during operation.

How to check the joystick for serviceability

To test the joystick, you should connect it to a personal computer, since it is Windows OS that allows you to calibrate and configure this device. Typically gamepads are connected in two ways:

  1. Via USB cable. In this case, after connection, automatic driver installation will begin, after which a message will appear that the device is operational and ready for use.
  2. Bluetooth connection. In this case, the user should pair before calibrating and setting up the controller.

REFERENCE! To connect a Bluetooth gamepad to a PC, you need a wireless module that supports Bluetooth. Typically laptops have it built in by default, but PCs may require an external module that can provide Bluetooth connectivity.

After connecting, press the Win+R key combination, after which you should enter the command “joy.cpl” in the line that opens. In the open “Game Devices” menu, you need to select the model of the connected joystick and right-click. Then select the “Properties” sub-item, which will open a menu for interacting with all control functions on the gamepad. You can also open the “Game Devices” menu through “Start”—“Control Panel”—“Game Devices.”

ATTENTION! If the required model is not displayed in the list of gaming devices, the problem may be that the required driver is missing. In order to download additional software, you should go to the official website of the developer, find the model of the required gamepad and download the latest version of the driver.

If this menu does not display key interactions, the device does not work correctly. If the connection was made via USB, you should check the cable and connector. If the gamepad is wireless, you need to check the charge level of the battery or batteries.

Joystick calibration

The gamepad may work properly, however, in some cases it requires calibration for it to work more correctly. To make this setting, you need to go to the “Start” menu—“Control Panel”—“Game Devices.” Open the menu “Settings” - “Calibrate”.

ATTENTION! Initially, the gamepad handles should be in a neutral position.

Once calibration begins, the user needs to follow simple instructions that will help the system recognize both the neutral and extreme positions of the handle. The program can also calibrate additional joystick axes and key assignments.

REFERENCE! Also, for setting up and calibrating the joystick, there are many different third-party applications that can not only ensure optimal operation of the joystick, but also determine the reassignment of keys on the device itself. For those users who do not want to download additional software, there are online services for adjusting and debugging parameters.
