What does IP53 smartphone protection level mean: let’s understand the terms
In the description of models, users can see, for example, the following line: “smartphone protection level IP53.” This marking describes the protection of the housing from dust and moisture particles. This article will help you understand what this and other similar characteristics mean.

What does IP mean?
The descriptions of different phone models often indicate the characteristics of the case. One of them is protection from dust and moisture particles. In the corresponding column, put the IP mark with a number, for example, IP55. The decoding of the letters means International Protection. We are talking about an international standard that establishes protection classes for smartphones and other devices.
In Russia, similar classes are standardized in accordance with GOST 14254-2015. Moreover, the document also indicates similar designations for IP. As already mentioned, the markings contain both letters and numbers. For example, there is a designation for the degree of protection of a smartphone IP53, which means a high degree of blocking from dust and strong jets of water.
The first number characterizes protection against solid particles, i.e. dust, the second - from water (moisture). The range of values in the first case can be from 0 to 6, in the second - from 0 to 9 inclusive. The phone's protection against water and solid particles is determined by the markings described in the table.
Number | First digit | Second digit |
0 | The device is not protected from dust | The device is not protected from moisture |
1 | protection against particles wider than 50 mm | protection against vertical falling drops (at right angles) |
2 | width more than 12.5 mm | protection against drops at an angle of more than 15 degrees |
3 | width more than 2.5 mm | from raindrops |
4 | width more than 1.0 mm | from continuous splashes |
5 | dust protection | from a jet of moderate pressure |
6 | completely impenetrable to dust | from a strong jet |
7 | from immersion in water for a few minutes
8 | from immersion for a long time
9 | complete tightness, protection from hot jets of strong pressure |
For example, the Samsung Galaxy A52 security smartphone meets the IP67 standard. This means the body is complete. prevents even small dust particles from getting inside (number 6). Also, the device is not afraid of drops, jets of water, rain, and even immersion in water for a short time (number 7).
When considering the choice of a secure smartphone, it is worth keeping in mind that even a high standard does not ensure complete sealing of the case. For example, it is still unsafe to shoot underwater with such a gadget. This is due to the negative influence of water pressure (especially during immersion), as well as the duration of the procedure. For such specialized purposes, it is worth choosing special underwater cameras.
Most Common Standards
Determining the level of protection of your phone is quite simple. The model description indicates the IP standard, by which you can understand how well the case and screen are made. It is recommended to consider the most common standards as examples.
IP67
These are mid-level devices and belong to the budget segment. The protective case for a smartphone in this case completely protects the gadget from dust, as well as from various influences of water:
- rain;
- jets of different pressures at different angles;
- short-term (for a few seconds) immersion to a depth of 1-1.5 m.
As an example, we can name the Samsung Galaxy A72, iPhone SE 2020. Such a phone can fall into the snow and lie on it or under it for a long time, after which it will remain operational. You can use it in a dusty area or in a dusty room. Falling into water is also allowed, but only for a short time. Those. If you immediately remove the gadget, wipe it and dry it thoroughly, it will continue to function normally.
IP68
The marking of this level of protection for smartphones means complete protection even from small dust particles. Safety from water includes all cases described for IP67 and additionally - immersion in water for a long time (up to 30 minutes), but to a shallow depth of 1-1.5 m.
If you answer the question of how to choose a secure smartphone, you can give specific examples of IP68 class models:
- iPhone 11;
- Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra;
- Samsung Galaxy Note 20;
- ASUS Zenfone 8.
Such gadgets can easily survive even a relatively long stay under water. But in any case, it is better not to risk it and immediately remove the phone, and then resume its operation only after it has completely dried.
IP69
Many users are interested in what a top-level secure phone is. Such models include IP69 standard gadgets. The housing completely blocks the entry of dust particles and water. The standard includes all previously described cases, as well as diving to shallow depths for an unlimited period of time.
Dust and waterproof IP69 phones are rare, examples include:
- OUKITEL WP5 Pro;
- Blackview BV6600;
- DOOGEE S86.
Protecting your phone case is really important, as falling into water or being exposed to rain can be critical for some models. Since such cases cannot be excluded even with careful use, it is better to choose models with a good housing standard of at least IP68.
