How to replace the battery in a gas meter, the details of the process
After three or five years of operation of the control device, the display goes out. The most common reason for this is a discharged battery. It is enough to change the batteries in the gas meter for it to work as before. Despite the simplicity of the action, not everyone knows what to do.

Is the date displayed when replacing the batteries on the gas meter?
A faulty screen may be due to two reasons: a dead battery and broken electronics. And if you can’t handle the second problem yourself, then you can solve the first one without calling a qualified technician, saving time and money.
Reference! If the gas meter malfunctions, the number of cubic meters of gas consumed is not counted, and charges are made at different rates, most often extortionate for residents of an ordinary apartment or house.
Even if you call the gas technicians in a timely manner, you may be charged at a different rate. There is only one solution here - to fix the problem yourself immediately after it is discovered.
The battery usually works the entire period between two meter verifications.Early failure may be due to the fact that someone grounded the gas pipe, which is why the battery died faster than the indicated period.
Procedure:
- Carefully pry off the seal using a knife. If there is a metal wire sealed on it, you must not touch it - you will be fined.
- The body has special recesses. It is necessary to pry the housing by them with a screwdriver, moving from top to bottom.
- Remove the battery. To do this, you can cut the wire with wire cutters or desolder them.
- Replace the battery, first paying attention to the location of the positive and negative poles.
- Solder the new element to the break points.
Check: if the data on the display is without a minus sign, it means order.
Do gas meters reset when the battery is replaced?
On average, about 3 cubic meters of gas are consumed per person per month. So, two people will spend 7-8, and a family of three will spend about 10. This is provided that you live under normal conditions, without the daily “hell’s kitchen”.
Important! If there is only one person registered in the apartment, then installing gas meters will be pointless: so you will pay for all cubes spent, not for the average reading per person.
Gas meter: battery replacement
The replacement period is influenced by the supply of gas networks.
It is recommended to purchase a meter in stores that specialize in them. The seller will give detailed advice on choosing the appropriate model and provide guidance on the answers to all your questions.
After replacing the meter, it is necessary to thoroughly check it. If the work is done efficiently, you can sign a certificate of completion. The device is then sealed.
Important! The seal must not be broken before the next verification date.. Residents will be fined for violating this rule.
Replacing the battery in a gas meter: instructions for who can change it
When replacing, please refer to the instruction manual provided by the manufacturer. If you don’t have the document on hand, you can find it on the Internet.
Important! If there is no wire seal, you may be able to replace the power supply yourself. If it is present, replacement is not possible, and If traces of a break-in are discovered, the apartment is subject to fines of up to two hundred thousand rubles.
If there is a seal, Gorgaz employees are responsible for replacing it.
- If the battery has not expired (it is measured by the dates of the two nearest verifications) and its non-working condition is not associated with malfunction, then the manufacturer will replace it free of charge. That is why it is better to purchase in specialized stores. Employees will draw up a breakdown report within the warranty period and send the device to the manufacturer for repair. In this case, you only pay for dismantling the meter and reinstalling it.
- Service life is determined by the manufacturer depending on the characteristics.
Also, if the battery fails, do not rush to contact the utility service. Completely replacing the device will cost you much more than installing a new battery yourself. However, if Gorgaz refuses to change it and insists on a complete replacement, residents have the right to assert their rights in the housing inspection of the local municipality.
How to change the battery in a gas meter yourself?
You will need:
- new battery;
- soldering iron;
- rosin;
- tin solder;
- knife or screwdriver;
- tweezers.
Initially, carefully pick up the seal with a knife. Please note that it must not be damaged.If the seal is surrounded by a sealed wire, then, we repeat, replacement is impossible on your own.
The device body contains two recesses. Use a screwdriver to pry them off: first the top one, then the bottom one. Remove the cover. You will see an electronic board on which there will be a battery that needs to be replaced.
First of all, you need to desolder the contacts with a soldering iron. Take out the old battery and insert a new one, locking it. Beware of prolonged contact between the soldering iron and the contact to avoid damaging the trace.
Then reassemble the device in reverse order. Soldering is carried out using rosin and acid to ensure the required temperature conditions and cleaning of the joint.
Important! If the battery does not work, check that the positive and negative poles match correctly. Before installing a new one, be sure to pay attention to this so as not to confuse it. You can also use an electrical measuring device to determine the poles, which will determine and measure the voltage characteristic.
The new battery must be identical in technical characteristics to the old one.
Depending on the model of the device, the process may vary slightly. The board may be located inside the cover. Then you can get to it by unscrewing the fastening screws.
A gas meter is a device whose working life is recorded in the documents for it. However, sometimes the screen goes blank. Most often, the reason for this is very simple - the battery is dead. This problem can be solved at home without calling Gorgaz employees. The main rule is to act carefully and not damage the seal, not to mix up the poles and be able to handle a soldering iron.
What is written here is correct in theory, but in practice it is complete nonsense.
Let's start with the fact that all these meters have a factory seal, if you break it you can safely throw the meter out the window - no one will register it, and representatives of the IWG will also impose a fine. Meters with a special hatch for changing the battery have already appeared, for example, the Oryol SGMB-4, where this possibility has already been built in by the factory. And it’s better not to interfere with the rest.
I absolutely agree.
this is complete nonsense...
What university said that grounding the pipe will quickly drain the battery?
This is the university, this is the knowledge, and therefore the advice. After reading such “advice”, people end up with money and problems.
An old story. When the meters began to go out en masse, a lot of ingenious speculations appeared, but the simplest one - a Chinese half-charged battery - did not even come to mind.
I do not agree with the author that I must pay for the dismantling and installation of the meter under warranty. During the warranty period, everything happens free of charge. I have personal experience with a gas meter; the battery finished its job untimely. All work is at the expense of the manufacturer.
“Early failure may be due to the fact that someone grounded the gas pipe, which is why the battery died faster than the indicated period.”
Author, please try to explain.
Are you familiar with electronics or just electrical appliances? Where did you come up with such conclusions about the “drawdown” of the batteries of an electrical appliance when grounding a gas pipe?
In parallel, a 3.7 volt mobile phone battery is connected to the discharged battery using wires with crocodile clips - it is removed after 8 hours. The readings remain the same, everything works great - tested on several meters!!!
The author suggests breaking the seal and at the same time warns of a fine of 200t
I changed it myself, soldered the battery out, then soldered in a new one, the readings are not reset if done quickly (2-3 minutes). After this, the gas technician came to inspect the gas equipment and nothing, there were no questions. Change it yourself, the manufacturer specially installs those that do not serve the required period. There were 2.5 years left until the end of verification.
The locksmiths who go to the maintenance department don’t really care that you broke the seal. But Mezhregiongaz controllers are very offended by this, even to the point of fines.
With this method of replacing the battery, the meter will reset half of the readings. The battery must be changed without disconnecting the old battery. You need to disconnect the old battery after soldering the new one.
