History of creation

Vintage interior design first appeared in the USA in 2002. The author was a talented architect and designer named Patrick Willis.

He designed the original house, investing considerable money in creating the plan. But there weren’t enough funds for the interior arrangement—it was necessary to get out somehow. Then an idea struck him outwit the gullible American public, in the sense of creating a unique style using antique furniture. To do this, he went to explore... the landfills of Alabama! There he found many rare things from the late 20s of the last century: tables, chairs, chests of drawers. The architect coated the found furniture with spray varnish.

The master built cabinets for books and dishes from the flat-bottomed boats he found. He refined all this, decorated it, organized a banquet and invited journalists.Entering the house, the guests were stunned: they had never seen such a design of the premises anywhere before! The public, accustomed to ostentatious gloss, was surprised by the unusual setting, consisting of ancient, rare things. The journalists liked the idea so much that the next morning Patrick woke up famous - he became the author of his own style called vintage!

Color solutions

Idea: using vintage, antique furniture and decorative elements. What colors are best for creating a vintage look? The romantic and elegant style suggests a calm atmosphere, so it is better to choose dim tones. Experts advise using autumn and delicate pastel shades:

  • ash pink;
  • pale lilac;
  • beige and gray;
  • brown;
  • light blue;
  • ivory.

So, all things look as if they have been slightly bleached by the sun, which gives them this unusual flavor.

Interior decoration

Each style has its own calling card. There's a whole set of them here. This includes wallpaper, furniture, decor, even lighting. Now let's look at this in more detail.

Walls

Wallpaper is a kind of “face” from which our perception of a room begins. Ideal for wall decoration Wallpaper with designs of flowers and patterns. The presence of floral patterns is also suitable for curtains, tablecloths and bedspreads. Use images of flowers, nature, birds, butterflies and intricate patterns. Whitewash or light plaster is used for ceilings. The plank floor also looks amazing in the vintage decor of the room.

On a note. The boards can be varnished with stain mixed into it, imitating valuable types of wood.By the way, some craftsmen specially drill holes in the boards with a small drill to create some kind of shaschel bruising, and remove some of the soft textures on the floorboards.

Furniture

Many masters specifically grow old household items: artificially create abrasions and roughness to give an antique gloss. It’s not bad if there are small cracks reminiscent of the past. Beautiful shabby or antique-style decoration will complement the surroundings. Wherein furniture should look decent and be durable. Shaky and flimsy structures can and should be repaired. The look should be aesthetic - this is the first thing, and secondly, you can accidentally fall from an old rickety chair.

Furniture made of carved wood, sideboards with patterns and ancient chests of drawers made of chipboard from the Soviet era are ideal for decoration.

Items for decoration

The decor will not be complete without additional decorative elements. Wood, ceramics and copper - the most commonly used materials for decorating rooms. To complete the vintage look:

  • antique wall clock with a pendulum;
  • dolls made from soft, rag materials;
  • knitted napkins;
  • porcelain dishes;
  • black and white photographs;
  • wooden boxes with carved patterns.

Lighting

Floor lamps, chandeliers with fringes, lamps made of copper or bronze will fit into the decoration. It is advisable that the lighting was dim and subdued. The use of energy-saving light bulbs will reduce electricity costs without spoiling the overall environment.

Caring for vintage items

Vintage items require special care. Compliance a few simple rules will help extend the life of household items and maintain their quality.

  1. The house will have to be cleaned more often to keep the room fresh. Caring for antique furniture is characterized by the use of gentle products. To remove dust, use soft cloths lightly moistened with detergent.
  2. Vintage is sensitive to conditions: high humidity and dryness can damage rare items. Dry air causes wood to dry out and lose color. In winter, a humidifier will save the situation. In the spring or autumn seasons, humidity can cause dilapidated elements to become deformed or damp. To prevent this, you can ventilate the rooms more often and avoid drying clothes indoors.
  3. Rare specimens must be protected from drafts. Do not place them near ventilation openings. Antiques - chairs, armchairs, cabinets and chests of drawers - are best placed away from air movement. Non-stop flows of drafts have a detrimental effect, making structures flimsy and fragile over time.
  4. It is worth protecting interior items from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Avoid location near radiators, heaters and other heat sources. Heating devices also do not contribute to the durability of wooden interior items - they simply dry out, even with good varnishing.

Vintage style in the interior is chosen by independent and creative people who value comfort and simplicity. And also those who simply do not have enough money for a luxurious renovation, like Patrick Willis once did. Competent interior decoration in vintage style will fill the house with culture and grace. And proper care of your products will emphasize your respect for history and the work of others.
