Minimum height of stretch ceiling
Stretch ceilings continue to be popular, but some people do not make this choice for fear of losing the room’s former volumes. One centimeter is the minimum installation height. But this is a rare occurrence: more often the canvas drops much lower, by about 3–7 cm. Let's find out if there are ways to reduce the distance from the rough surface.

How far does a suspended ceiling go down?
As stated above, most often the indentation is about 7 cm. This is due to the features of the design system, installation of lighting fixtures and other important characteristics of the stretch ceiling.
Consult installation experts. After examining the room, they will be able to determine the exact dimensions and possible indentations.
Reasons for reducing altitude
The main indicator is the unevenness of the original surface and the baguette for installing the canvas. With strong changes in concrete you will have to level to the “zero” point. This is followed by installation of a profile, which is divided into three types:
- wall;
- ceiling;
- combined.
Which one to install is decided by the master. But vertical profile gives benefit compared to the wall by 4 cm.
The thickness of the tension structure is greatly influenced by the number of ceiling levels, as well as lighting fixtures.So, for a large chandelier, 10 cm is required.
Do not forget that the presence of utilities between the canvas and the initial upper limit also takes up space.
Is it possible to reduce the distance?
There are two ways to solve the problem - raise the ceiling visually or choose the right material that will minimize the distance from the top. And for greater effect, it is better to combine the two methods together.
Tips for the first method:
- Dark and bright wall decoration visually elevates the ceiling.
- The glossy canvas creates the illusion of volume.
- The tone should be lighter than the room's wallpaper.
- Using multiple levels will create an additional feeling of sublimity.
With low ceilings, visual deception is unlikely to help. In this case, I advise you to pay attention to the choice of materials.
For minimal loss of distance, choose a plastic profile. It is worth understanding that it is much inferior in strength to aluminum. Most suitable for saving space – clip-on baguette height 35 mm. It is used quite rarely due to installation difficulties.
Installing a standard single-level ceiling will take a shorter distance. Unlike a two-level one, only 3-4 cm will be spent. If possible, it is better to avoid lamps. If you can’t live without them, give preference to point ones in your choice. The top will drop by 3–7 cm.
At what height is it permissible to install a suspended ceiling?
If you comply with SanPiN, the installation of a single-level ceiling is carried out at a height of 270 cm, a two-level ceiling - 300 cm, and multi-level ceilings - starting from 330 cm.
Why is it not advisable to mount a tension structure close to the sub-ceiling?
The thing is that concrete cannot withstand the load of a suspended ceiling (1 sq. m of wall per 100 kg).There is a high probability that in the future the profile will move away, and the canvas will sag as a result. In addition, installers will have to drill holes at an angle, which will cause difficulties.
An electrical cable is placed in the gaps, which can be easily damaged during operation. There is a high probability that such installation will ask for additional payment. This is due to the fact that in addition to the complexity of the work, extra materials will be required.
Most common minimum is 3 cm. But it all depends on the original surface, its quality and other factors: the presence of lighting fixtures and chandeliers, communication pipes and the choice of profile for installing the canvas.
