How to glue wallpaper to the ceiling?

Wallpapering is not a complicated process, but only if the canvases are glued to the walls. When you need to decorate a ceiling in this way, the task becomes overwhelming for many. Correctly gluing the ceiling surface is a complex technological process. Doing it on your own alone is even more difficult. It is important to go through all stages of registration: preparation of the plane, marking and cutting, as well as direct gluing. Today I will tell you how to do this competently and without the help of finishers.

How to hang wallpaper on the ceiling yourself?

Thanks to their environmentally friendly composition, most canvases are perfect for finishing the ceiling in a bedroom or children's room. In these rooms, it is important to monitor the quality of the materials used: they should not cause harm to the body.

Wallpaper is glued to different surfaces - drywall, concrete, plaster, plywood or OSB. The main thing is to follow the technology.

Preparatory stage

Preparing the rough ceiling is an important stage that should be given close attention. Remove furniture from the room or cover it with protective film, remove paintings and other decorations from the walls, dismantle lighting fixtures, and protect wires with electrical tape.

I also advise you to turn off the air conditioner or split system in advance and close the windows tightly. This will create a microclimate in the room favorable for gluing.

Next we perform the following actions:

  1. We remove the whitewash. The top layer is used with a spatula, then the rough surface is washed with a solution of water with the addition of soda.
  2. Level the surface. For minimal defects, putty is sufficient, and medium-sized irregularities are removed with a layer of plaster. If major leveling is required, they purchase drywall and hangers, making the structure from gypsum plasterboard sheets.
  3. We prime the ceiling. This will ensure maximum adhesion - adhesion to the wallpaper when pasting. The product is applied using a roller or soft brush.

In some places, puttying will be required. The plane must be perfectly flat.

Marking and cutting material

The panels are applied perpendicular to the window openings. Otherwise, the natural light coming from the windows will will highlight all the joints unattractively. To mark, measure a length from the side wall equal to the width of the roll. On the opposite side, repeat the action, and then connect the resulting points into one line.

The entire ceiling will have to be marked in accordance with the parameters of the selected wallpaper. Don't forget about a small allowance on both sides of the fabric. Next we start cutting.

The wallpaper is laid out on a flat surface and the required amount is measured for one cut. Separate the resulting piece using a sharp knife or scissors. Don't forget about the drawing: if docking is required, take this into account when cutting. After cutting, number and carefully place on a clean surface.

Before wallpapering, dilute a sufficient amount of glue. By its structure it should resemble thick sour cream without lumps. Follow the instructions, as different types of glue are prepared using their own technologies. Some are ready to apply immediately after preparation, while others require time to reach the desired consistency.

After making sure that the glue is ready, we proceed to gluing:

  1. We wet the roller in the adhesive composition and lubricate the section of wallpaper as thoroughly as possible, leave for 10–15 minutes, during which the paper will become saturated.
  2. During this time, apply glue to the part of the ceiling where the first section will be glued.
  3. The sheet is unrolled, the edge is applied to the plane and carefully, with light strokes, it is straightened on the ceiling.
  4. Using a rubber spatula or a soft roller, we expel excess air, working from the center to the edges of the canvas.
  5. In the corners and joints with the wall, the wallpaper is pressed tightly against the rough plane and the excess is cut off with a sharp knife.

To install the lighting, make a crosswise cut. Then thread the wires through the hole and press the edges of the wallpaper tightly to the surface.

Each canvas is glued quickly so that the adhesive base does not have time to dry out. Otherwise, the grip on the plane will be insufficient. After completing the work, leave the room closed until completely dry.

How to hang wallpaper on the ceiling for one person?

It is quite difficult to do this on your own and alone. In this case, I advise you to choose non-woven wallpaper. They do not require applying glue to the canvas, only to the rough ceiling.

You will have to coat the entire plane and, taking the first piece, carefully glue it. It is important work quickly with a roller or spatulaso that the wallpaper lies flat and without air bubbles.

It is problematic to glue paper webs, since they quickly diverge and form unevenness, and also require careful application of the adhesive base to the material and the rough surface.

Types of wallpaper suitable for covering the ceiling

Almost any variety of modern materials will do. For a budget-friendly finishing option, choose non-woven or vinyl: they look great and hide small defects.

Their only drawback is low vapor permeability. To avoid unpleasant consequences in the form of mold and mildew, I advise you to treat the rough ceiling with antifungal mixtures and let them dry thoroughly.

Fiberglass wallpaper is a stylish material that can be coated with acrylic paints to suit your taste. They have a complex texture and are absolutely environmentally friendly. A good option for a bedroom or children's room.
