Apartment in art deco style
So, you are planning to renovate and completely update the design of the entire apartment. The means allow you to do something really worthwhile, so that the soul first turns around and then turns back. There is one style whose name speaks for itself - art deco. Why goes without saying, and what kind of direction is this anyway? This will be discussed in the article.
The content of the article
A brief excursion into history
Art Deco originated in France in the twenties of the last century. The phrase itself art deco, as you are already beginning to guess, is also French. It is translated into Russian as "decorative art" Initially, this style was used exclusively for finishing luxury housing belonging to wealthy families. Today this bar has lowered a little, and the middle class will also be willing to renovate in this style. Moreover, we are talking about a three-room apartment somewhere in Balabanovo, and not about a three-story mansion in Paris.
Characteristic features of art deco apartment design
It is noteworthy that despite the apparent naturalness of the arrangement and mutual proportions of the interior items, behind this there is painstaking preliminary work on calculations, based on clear principles, one might say, the canons of the art deco style.
Main principles of interior composition
There are two of them - gradation and strict symmetry. Stepping means that the composition itself should be built according to the principle “from smallest to largest” - for example, the proportions of chairs relative to the table resemble the steps of a staircase. The height of the table, sofa and bedside table is strictly at the same level, for example, half the height of the chest of drawers, and so on.
Principle symmetry means that no element of the interior as a whole should stand out as too large or too small. Otherwise, the situation will look awkward.
Features of the color scheme
When choosing an art deco finish, do not forget that the main feature of this style is alternation of dark and light colors. This combination looks so harmonious that it is compared to piano keys. Any bright acidic red, green, yellow and other gray-brown-raspberry colors in art deco decoration are completely inappropriate and will vulgarize the whole picture.
Of course, in addition to black and white, others are also used subdued tones - beige, soft pink, violet, brown, golden, silver, cream, shades of gray... But all this should in no case be too bright.
Wall decoration
How to decorate the walls? The main rule here is monotony. Art Deco walls are only background for furniture and decorative elements. Therefore, apartment owners will have two main options for finishing them:
- Painting in a single light color. It is hardly necessary to explain in detail that high-quality puttying of the walls will be required, after which there should be no visible irregularities.
- Wallpaper sticker, moreover, with a monotonous image of some kind of ornament, less often - regular geometric figures, or without it at all. Wallpaper with pictures is unlikely to be appropriate.
Furniture selection
You can hardly save money here.Furniture should not only be functional, but also luxurious. Specialists are strongly encouraged intricacy and pretentiousness of forms, the presence of additional decorative elements and inserts on surfaces. A luxurious sofa and a chest of drawers with carved fronts would be extremely appropriate in the living room. It would be nice to have a set made of natural wood in the kitchen. In the bedroom, an integral part of the furnishings is the dressing table.
But with all this, we must remember the importance of symmetry. A small sofa, no matter how cute and comfortable it may be, in combination with a huge armchair is unlikely to look attractive and may well ruin the entire appearance of the room.
Material requirements
The Art Deco style places serious demands on the materials used. Furniture must be made only from natural wood species, and not just any, but elite ones. In the worst case, veneer for valuable wood species is also suitable. The following materials would be appropriate for upholstery:
- silk;
- velvet;
- Genuine Leather;
- animal skins.
Interior elements should look luxurious. For this they get off crystal, enamel, natural marble, metals, outwardly claiming to be similar to precious ones.
The use of cheap plastic materials in the art deco style is, frankly, problematic. If they got in somewhere, they shouldn’t even look like plastic in appearance.
Project requirements
The style itself suggests very serious requirements for a design project. This is due to the fact that the finished look of the interior is calculated in advance, so that later the same table in the living room, ten centimeters lower than necessary, does not look like a cow under saddle. In this particular style, any annoying little thing can ruin the whole picture.
The project must be perfectly calibrated, based on strict adherence to the principles I have already mentioned. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to create one yourself, even if you have any delicate artistic taste. The problem is in preliminary calculations and knowledge of proportions. Therefore, it is better to turn to an experienced professional with a reputation.
Art Deco is a very elegant interior style. An apartment decorated in this style will emphasize the wealth of the owner and his good taste.
