Gothic style in the bathroom

Complex, multifaceted, challenging, and at the same time fabulous and magical. It surprises with its courage and evokes admiration for its unusual beauty, grace, majesty and is shrouded in mystery. All this is about Gothic - the culminating creation of the era of chivalry, cult in purpose and religious in its internal content.

Someone may be surprised to see a modern residential interior, decorated in a brutal, slightly gloomy style, mainly in dark colors. Especially when it comes to the bathroom. But refined and sophisticated Gothic allows you to create a room with a truly unique design, the main thing is to maintain the fine line between sophisticated minimalism and deliberate gloom.

General features of the Gothic style in the bathroom

When mentioning Gothic, many imagine a dark room in the spirit of the iconic “Adams Family”: majestic columns, ceiling beams, stained glass windows, monumental staircases, massive furniture and textiles, decorated in black tones, and around funeral candles and candelabra. Those who think so should reconsider their attitude towards design. Or get acquainted with the works of artists or sculptors of the Middle Ages.

True Gothic is shrouded in a halo of mysterious twilight, where dynamics in creating interior design is achieved through the use of thematic attributes in the design: heraldic emblems, deep colors, forged decorative elements, heavy draperies.

Characteristic textures and colors of walls, ceilings, floors

The atmosphere of the bathroom, decorated at the same time in a romantic and brutal dark medieval style, looks a little cold. On the other hand, the room must be luxurious and sophisticated.

To achieve a mysterious atmosphere you must use:

  1. High quality interior items. Products must be unique, perhaps even antique.
  2. Plumbing fixtures of unusual shapes and colors.

Many people mistakenly believe that the Gothic palette is gray and meager. In fact, this is not the case - bright shades are present in every element of the Middle Ages and late Gothic periods. A luxurious interior, filled with a refined and mysterious spirit of chivalry, can be achieved using lemon, green, carmine, red and other bright colors.

Walls

The walls in a bathroom decorated in a Gothic style are an independent decorative element. Therefore, there is no need to mask their surface with smooth plaster or glossy ceramic tiles.

Walls.

The best option for decoration is considered to be a gray color scheme: from pearl to rich graphite. You can also work with coatings:

  • carmine red;
  • black;
  • in shades of yellow: from pale tones to golden.

Reference. Surfaces trimmed with wood panels look especially organic in a bathroom decorated in a Gothic style.

Ceiling

This is not an independent structural element, but a continuation of the walls.

For brave people, an interesting solution could be to decorate the vault with mirror panels. Other options are also allowed, for example: massive beam structures made of natural wood, stretch ceilings with a glossy or matte surface.

Floor

Ceramic tiles are considered the optimal flooring for a room in a knightly style.

Bathroom floor.

Reference. The main condition is that the slabs must be stylized as antique in order to emphasize the spirit of the Middle Ages.

The selected cladding must meet the following parameters:

  1. Large dimensions. You can use porcelain stoneware slabs.
  2. Dark color palette. These can be shades of gray, purple or black.
  3. Rough surface.

It is allowed to use artificially aged tiles with scratches and abrasions.

Other interior features

The stylistic design, emphasizing the overall mood, retains the sophistication and drama, severity and luxury of the Middle Ages, but with a modern interpretation. It is necessary to give preference to individual details of thematic stylization: vaulted or coffered ceiling, pointed arches, elongated stained glass windows, forged decorative elements, carved wooden panels.

Window in the bathroom.

Reference. Since creating real stained glass windows is not cheap, they can be replaced with stained glass film that imitates the original design.

Textiles can be used for decoration. For example, these could be unusual curtains for the bathroom, heavy curtains on the windows to match the walls. Low ottomans upholstered in dense fabric are considered appropriate.

The gloom of the room will be enlivened by original frescoes, bright mosaics, interesting paintings or ornaments, elements of natural stone in the decoration and wooden panels. And built-in plumbing and niches with halogen lighting will not only modernize the space, but also allow it to sparkle with new colors.

When choosing lighting fixtures, you should give preference to options with elements of decorative forging, and as wall sconces you can place models stylized as elegant metal candlesticks or candelabra.

Selection of plumbing fixtures, furniture and accessories

Plumbing should emphasize the overall mood, and not stand out from it. Therefore, this issue must be approached with full responsibility.

Bath

A good solution is a dark-colored tank mounted on massive legs in the shape of lion paws. A large antique cast iron bowl with a raised, rounded headboard would also work. The plumbing should be completed with a sink and faucets made of copper or brass.

Toilet

If the bathroom is combined with a toilet, then you cannot do without choosing a suitable toilet. However, difficulties arise here - any such plumbing fixture, even one made in an ancient design, represents an object of civilization. Therefore, you need to select a model that is so inconspicuous that it will not attract attention against the general background. The best option is plumbing fixtures with a long flush pipe and a high tank.

Toilet.

Furniture and accessories

Traditional hanging cabinets are not a good idea. Instead, it is more appropriate to choose a tall cabinet with doors decorated with patterns of mirror elements or stained glass.

All furniture should be made of natural wood, decorated with elegant carvings.A particularly good solution is interior items decorated with patterns in the form of grape leaves, roses or reeds.

Gothic bathroom.

The following will fit perfectly into a bathroom shrouded in an aura of mystery:

  • chrome heated towel rail;
  • faucets and fittings made of copper, brass and gold-plated metal;
  • roof rails

Gothic design is a kind of decadent ambiance, mysterious and elegant. It intricately combines strict minimalism, medieval Gothic and modern trends. The direction allows you to safely experiment with materials: glass, porcelain stoneware, natural wood. You can add a modern touch with stylized plumbing fixtures and fashionable halogen lighting.
