DIY wine cabinet
Storing good wine, especially vintage wine, requires special conditions. In cellars it is stored on special racks or shelves with individual cells for each unit. In an ordinary apartment, you will need a wine cabinet for this. It can be purchased ready-made, but for a small collection the significant material costs of purchasing such equipment are impractical.
Reference! The finished refrigerator cabinet is designed like a refrigerator with a compressor, so its cost is quite high.

How to make a wine rack yourself
To store ordinary wines at home, you can make a cabinet with your own hands in several simple ways. Before starting work, you need to decide on the location of future wine storage. To do this, you need to follow simple rules:
- Determine the location for permanent installation of the cabinet.
- The ideal storage temperature for wines is 10-15 degrees. In a city apartment, it is impossible to ensure this condition without special refrigeration equipment, so the storage location should be located as far as possible from heating radiators. Installation in rooms with a “warm floor” system is also excluded, as this will have a cooling effect on the wine.
- Indoor humidity should be maintained at 60-70%.
- The storage location must be provided with a constant flow of fresh air.
- The cabinet should not be located in an area exposed to sunlight.
To set up a wine cabinet, you can use several options:
- Use an existing one, dividing it with diagonal X-shaped partitions of different sizes for each bottle separately or at the rate of storing 2-3 bottles per cell, laying them one on top of the other or dividing them into square cells of the same size for individual storage of each bottle.
- Adapt the existing niches in the apartment.
- Make an arc-shaped stand with perforations for standard 0.7 liter wine bottles, which will be stored neck down. Such a perforated arc can become a decoration for the kitchen or living room.
- For small rooms, when every square meter is valued. m, make a narrow vertical shelf from floor to ceiling with separate shelves for each bottle and perforation of one of the sides with round holes along the diameter of the bottle. This design can serve as a partition for the space of a small room.
- Set up a shelf for storing wine from cylindrical clay blocks (ideal for storing wine in a cellar) or from PVC pipes of different diameters (the design is unusual and impressive).
The best places to store wines are:
- cellar;
- kitchen;
- dining room;
- attic;
- substaircase space;
- free-standing tabletop.
DIY wooden wine cabinet
Despite the wide variety of design ideas for arranging wine storage areas, a wine cabinet made of wood remains a classic option.
Important! Wooden structures allow the wine to breathe.
Its big advantage, in contrast to shelves and racks that are made for a specific space, is:
- mobility (the ability to be transported to another place);
- Beautiful design.
The advantage of a wooden wine cabinet is the ability to repair it yourself.
There are many different models made of wood. When starting to make a cabinet with your own hands, you need to decide on its size and shape.
Attention! It is imperative to provide an additional number of cells in case the wine collection increases.
The design may have one or two doors or not have them at all. Making a wine cabinet differs from making shelves and racks only in the presence of a body. Internal shelves are designed in the ways described above: X-shaped, square or round holes for each bottle. These can be separate modules, then assembled together. Models with combined internal storage shelves fit effectively into the interior.
Reference! The best option for bottle storage is an individual cell that prevents the bottles from possibly touching while being removed from the cabinet.
To make wine cabinets that will be located in a cool place, it is recommended to use valuable wood with high moisture resistance:
- oak;
- ash;
- maple;
- nut;
- cherry;
- Karelian birch;
- acacia
The wood of these species is distinguished by its durability and beautiful design of products made from them, although the cost of such a model will be rather high.
Important! It is not recommended to use coniferous wood that has a persistent resinous odor.
In practice, to make wine cabinets with your own hands, they often use pine or spruce, which are easier to process than valuable species and more affordable.
Step-by-step instructions on how to make a wine cabinet
Let's look at step-by-step instructions for a wine cabinet without doors with individual cells inside.
Step 1. Prepare a drawing indicating all dimensions and a diagram of the internal shelves. The depth of the cabinet should be no less than the height of the bottles.
Step 2. Calculate all necessary materials.
For production you will need:
- solid boards 20 mm thick;
- wooden beam 30x30 mm;
- sheets of thick plywood;
- metal corners;
- fasteners;
- varnish
Important! When purchasing wood, pay attention to the uniformity of the relief, the absence of knots and interlayers, which reduce the strength and shorten the service life of the product.
Step 3. Prepare the necessary tools (tape measure, saw, hammer, grinder, jigsaw, electric drill, chisel, level, stapler).
Step 4. Assemble the back and front frames from timber, fasten them with self-tapping screws, and use corners for rigidity in the corners.
Step 5. Cover the frame with pre-prepared boards, which must be well dried, sanded and coated with special protective compounds.
Step 6. Cut the required number of partitions from sheets of plywood. The width of the partitions will be equal to the depth of the cabinet.
Step 7 Make cuts in the horizontal partitions at an angle of 90 degrees to the size of the cells and rigidly connect them with the vertical ones into a single structure. With good rigidity and correct dimensions, it is not necessary to attach the structure to the cabinet walls. In the same way, you can divide it into cells using diagonal partitions. In this case, the cuts are made at an angle of 45 degrees.
Partitions can be made from boards; the technology for creating the structure is the same as with plywood. A completely wooden wine cabinet will look impressive in any interior.
Important! The size of the cells should be such that the bottle fits into it freely, but does not roll around.
Step 8 Cover the external and internal partitions with matte varnish.
Important! Wine stored in bottles placed on their sides or neck down retains its taste much longer.
