What is an auger juicer
A lack of various vitamins and microelements and a crazy, exhausting rhythm of life are a common occurrence for a modern person of any age. Freshly squeezed juice from vegetables or fruits can be an excellent source of these same vitamins. Moreover, the latest models of juicers are capable of squeezing nectar even from seeds, sprouts and greens. Any household appliance is subject to constant improvement and updating, which contributes to an increase in the number of models. For home production of fresh juices, there are centrifugal and auger juicers. The latter have a more gentle spin mode and some advantages. We will find out which ones below.

What is an auger juicer?
The basic principle of operation of the screw apparatus is the production of juice using cold pressing. It is in the absence of warm air that lies the secret of obtaining juice more rich in vitamins - in the warmth it oxidizes and the beneficial elements simply disappear. The advantages of the auger juicer do not end there, but only start:
- The equipment has increased productivity and versatility, which will allow you to work with complex and hard products, such as seeds, nuts, and herbs;
- work is almost silent;
- the operating speed of such a device is almost twice as high as that of the centrifugal type;
- very easy maintenance - just a glass of water inside and start working.
As the name suggests, the operating principle of this juicer is that it has an auger. In addition to it, there is a pressing mechanism and a bowl. The principle of operation of the device is similar to a meat grinder - when loading products, they are captured by the auger blades, pressure is applied through a press, the juice is filtered through special membranes, the finished, strained juice is separated into a juice receiver, and the pulp into a bowl.
Considering that the juice production process occurs almost using natural pressure and grinding, there are no actions in the device that can heat the air. Warm air oxidizes some products and often, when using centrifugal models, it was possible to obtain sour juices. In screw devices, the acid will be exclusively a feature of the loaded product.
Types of auger juicers
Juicers equipped with augers have two types of designs and can be vertical or horizontal. In addition to their appearance, they are distinguished by additional elements, efficiency and convenience:
- Horizontal models will produce juice if the products are “pushed” by special pushers. This procedure slightly increases the time required to produce juice, which can be a disadvantage. But the clear advantage of these models is the better production of juice from greens or herbs, as well as working with solid products - nuts, vegetables, seeds, berries with seeds.
- Vertical screw-type juicers are capable of independently capturing and processing incoming products; they do not require pushers. Such models are more compact and productive.
IMPORTANT! Some large whole products cannot be loaded into horizontal models - they will have to be pre-cut.
In addition to design features, juicers may differ in the number of augers themselves - there may be one or two.
The difference between a screw juicer and a centrifugal juicer
In order to understand the main differences between the two types of juicers - auger and centrifugal, you need to understand the operating principle of the latter. Products placed in centrifugal models are first crushed to the state of porridge, which is then distributed over the walls of the centrifuge. The centrifuge, in turn, rotates very strongly, passing juice through its walls and leaving the cake on them. It is not surprising that such work produces a lot of noise, but the yield of finished juice is less than in auger devices. If we compare the characteristics of both models, we can highlight the following indicators:
- price - the centrifugal model is guaranteed to be cheaper than the screw model;
- Only a juicer with an auger differs in its versatility of working with any products, including hard ones; a centrifugal one cannot cope with hard products;
- the quality of the finished juice is better with auger devices, due to the absence of warm air and the process of juice oxidation;
- the consumption of initial products in centrifugal models is very high, but when the auger operates, it will be possible to obtain 45–85% more juice from the same amount of loaded ingredients;
- juice squeezed in a screw juicer can be stored for up to 48 hours, but juice from a centrifugal model has already been exposed to oxygen and heat, and has a short shelf life;
- when the auger operates, pulp may appear in the juice, but not everyone likes this - centrifugal models will leave all the pulp in their own centrifuge;
- The propagation of sound when operating a centrifugal juicer is very high, and auger models are much quieter.
In general, even minor disadvantages of devices with augers can easily be converted into convenience. For example, the pulp released during juice production may be desirable for children, and if you grind soft and overripe fruits, you can get an excellent puree.
What criteria should you consider when choosing a juicer?
In order to purchase a juicer that will perform all the required work and produce a product of the required quality and consistency, you need to decide in advance the purpose of its purchase. Vertical versions of auger models are more compact in size, and in the kitchen, most often, there is little space for storing large household appliances. If the goal is to obtain unusual juices from unusual ingredients - nuts, herbs, herbs - a horizontal model is suitable. There are other parameters that you need to pay attention to:
- Case material can be plastic or metal. Modern plastic is durable, safe, and easy to clean. But if the model uses white plastic, it will quickly turn the color of fruits or vegetables. Steel options will be heavier, but generally more durable.
- The material of the screw itself can be plastic, aluminum, cast iron or steel.Plastic augers are new and help in getting rid of the steely taste.
- The membrane material and its size can be made of steel or plastic. Steel membranes do not react in any way to fruit acids, but if the juicer is intended for one type of fruit, you can get by with a plastic mesh. The size of the holes will directly affect the texture of the juice and the presence of pulp in it.
- Hole for storing products - it is better to choose those models in which this hole has a larger diameter. Then you won’t have to cut some products, and you can put in more at a time.
- Operating modes - there can be from 2 to 9. In order to get a universal model, it is better to choose a variety of modes.
- Reverse mode – not every model is equipped with it, but this indicator can seriously help in cleaning the auger. When the reverse mode is turned on, the auger begins to spin in the opposite direction, getting rid of stuck pieces of food.
- Power – this indicator affects the speed of obtaining a finished glass of juice. The average power rating of most models is 200 watts, which will allow you to get a whole glass of juice in just a couple of minutes. For household purposes, such characteristics are quite satisfactory.
ATTENTION! Some manufacturers may resort to tricks and focus on the low noise level of their models. In fact, all auger devices have a low noise level - 25-30 dB, which is comparable to talking in a low voice.
When choosing a suitable model, of course, you will have to be guided by the brand name, price and reviews. If freshly squeezed juices are a new idea to diversify your diet, you should not immediately choose an expensive and multifunctional model.It is quite possible that following the principles of proper and healthy nutrition will soon become boring, and there will not be enough fresh fruits in the house for healthy juices - then the device will have to be hidden in the closet. But the general capabilities of modern models - processing herbs, seeds, nuts - can significantly diversify the diet, recipes, and serving of many dishes. Perhaps it's time to change the usual association of juicers with a glass of orange juice and use their other capabilities.
