Knitting density on a knitting machine - table
Knitting with your own hands is an opportunity to create unusual and unique things that cannot be purchased in a store. Having decided to knit an item on a knitting machine, you need to prepare and calculate all the knitting parameters.

How to determine knitting density on a knitting machine
If you are planning to knit on a special machine, you need to decide on such a parameter as the density of knitting on a knitting machine - the table will help you with this. This parameter depends on the pattern you choose and the thickness of the yarn.
Typically, there are two types of knit density:
- Horizontally. This is the number of loops.
- Vertically. This is the number of stitch rows.
Both indicators are taken into account in relation to 1 cm of mating. In order not to knit a sample every time (if you don’t have enough time for this or there are some other objective reasons), you can use the experience of other knitters who have already determined this indicator for different criteria.
Table
Yarn thickness | Density of the front surface (10 cm) | Number of turns in 2.5 cm | Meters per 100g | Spoke size (in mm) | Number on the density regulator |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Very thin | 28–32 | 18+ | 600–800 | 1.75-2.75 | 7kl:2-4 |
Thin | 24–28 | 16 | 400–480 | 2.75-3 | 7th grade: 5–7 5th grade: 1-2 |
Welterweight | 20-24 | 14 | 300-400 | 3.5-4 | 7th grade: 7-8 5th grade: 2-4 |
Average | 22 | 13 | 240-300 | 3.75-4.5 | 5th grade: 5-7 4kl:2-4 |
Semi-thick | 16-20 | 12 | 200-240 | 4.5-5.5 | 5th grade: 8-10 4kl:5-7 3kl:0-1 |
Fat | 18 | 10-11 | 160-200 | 5-5.5 | 4kl:8-10 3rd grade: 2-6 |
Very thick | 16 | 10 | 110-130 | 5.5-6 | 3rd grade: 7-9 |
NOTE. The table contains all the necessary information, the main thing is to use it correctly.
Using the information in this table, you can save time, because you know information about the knitting density.
Loop test sample
The experience of other craftswomen is, of course, good, but it will still be better if you knit a sample with your own hands. The entire result of your work often depends on this sample. To convince yourself, estimate how much time you will spend knitting this small sample, and how much time it will take you to knit a product that is almost ready, but you realized that you missed the size.
REFERENCE. For knitting, it is better to choose special machine yarn.
When the loop test sample is ready, it needs to rest, steam it. Pin the product using special pins and wait until it dries.
To determine the density, tie the fabric on 10–15 needles, and change the density every 10–15 rows. Go from lower to higher density.
IMPORTANT. The sample must be knitted from the yarn that you selected for knitting the item.
