What is manual freezer defrosting?

Almost every refrigerator includes a freezer and a refrigerator. Each of them has its own purpose. As a rule, the refrigerator compartment is much larger than the freezer and is designed for short-term storage of certain products. A freezer is necessary for long-term storage of products that are stored for a long time or stored only at sub-zero temperatures (for example: meat, herbs, minced meat, dumplings, etc.). Why does the freezer need to be defrosted and how often should it be defrosted? It's worth looking into this.

Manual freezer defrosting technology

Defrosting the freezerThe name of this procedure speaks for itself. When using the freezer without a system No Frost, it needs timely defrosting. The process is very simple! It is necessary to remove the contents of the freezer during the procedure (it is better to do it when there is little food in the freezer). Next, the refrigerator is disconnected from power so that the compressor does not continue to create cold. After some time, the pieces of ice in the chamber will begin to freeze; they need to be thrown away as soon as possible. All that remains is to remove the water from the freezer; it is advisable to wipe it dry! Important. This procedure must be carried out 1-2 times a year.

How to preserve food when defrosting

It is unlikely that you will find a more suitable place for frozen food than the freezer, because the temperature in it is stable from -25 to -30C. In winter, an excellent solution would be to take the food outside or onto the balcony; a cellar is also suitable. But it is best to prepare for the procedure in advance and, without having frozen products at all, defrost them.

Do freezers with NoFrost need to be defrosted?

Freezer compartment with No Frost systemToday, in electrical stores, you can find 3 types of refrigerators: these are devices with No Frost, with drip systemmine and standard refrigerators (of which today there are fewer and fewer). The drip system in refrigerators is installed for the normal operation of the refrigeration compartment, so we will not consider the principle of its operation.
No_Frost – a modernized type of drip system. The principle of operation is to install the evaporator behind the wall of the freezer storage. A fan built in the same place ensures stable circulation of cold air in the chamber. Thus, condensed water does not have time to appear, and frost does not form on the walls of the freezer.

Important: freezing systems with No Frost require virtually no maintenance; you can forget about manual defrosting.

Freezers with such a system are increasingly replacing standard ones every day, as they are considered the most advanced. But despite their modernity, freezers of this “kind” have their drawbacks.

Here are three main disadvantages of devices:

  1. Increased energy consumption. The fan in No Frost consumes additional energy when operating, and the owners’ electricity bills will increase quite a bit, since the refrigerator operates around the clock.
  2. Reducing the volume of the freezer compartment. The installed mechanism behind the chamber wall reduces its capacity by about 20 liters, which is a significant disadvantage.
  3. Overcharge. The price of such refrigerators is 50–120% higher than usual, so you should approach your choice wisely!

But all the shortcomings can be tolerated if you really don’t want to maintain the refrigerator. In addition, with this type of system, freezers serve owners much longer.

Why do you need to manually defrost the freezer?

Defrosting is the main and most important type of refrigerator maintenance. Freezing of the freezer occurs when the door is opened when moist air enters it. Ice formed in large quantities can cause serious damage to both food and the refrigerator as a whole.

Consequences without timely defrosting:

  1. Manual chamber defrostingSpoilage of food in the refrigerator compartment. In modern refrigerators, the freezer is located at the bottom, because otherwise (as in old refrigerators) the walls of the refrigeration compartment will gradually freeze, as a result of which food will begin to deteriorate.
  2. Reducing the volume of the freezer compartment. If the appearance of ice is ignored for a long time, the walls begin to freeze with a thick layer of ice. This will not only reduce capacity, but will also spoil the reliefs in the storage room. You shouldn’t let your equipment get to this point!
  3. Reduced service life. The refrigerator is a long-lasting appliance. Now, you can come across some old models and see their reliability. But careless handling and lack of necessary care measures will contribute to rapid damage to the device!

There are many more reasons why defrosting is necessary, but they are not as important as the above.

Now you know about the types of freezers and how to maintain specific models. You can make the right choice when purchasing your next refrigerator model! Remember that timely care of the device will allow it to last longer!
