How to fix a vacuum cleaner hose
A vacuum cleaner is indispensable when cleaning an apartment or house. As a rule, the main body of the device, including the electric motor, lasts quite a long time. Plastic peripheral parts often fail. This often happens with a hose, without which the device becomes completely unusable.
All that remains is to buy a new device, but this is quite expensive and impractical, since the old vacuum cleaner is generally functional, or try to find a suitable hose, which is not always easy or quick, and also not free. How to deal with the situation differently, namely, to repair a damaged hose?

Design features of the vacuum cleaner hose
Before you begin repairs, you need, as always, to understand the design. Most hoses of modern vacuum cleaners are made of polypropylene corrugated pipe, which has elasticity, thanks to which they can stretch and contract within small limits. The length of the sleeve varies around one and a half meters.
The hose is terminated on both sides with plastic pipes. An extension holder for the working brush is attached to one of the nozzles.The second pipe is a coupling that is inserted into the body of the vacuum cleaner.
REFERENCE! As a rule, a violation of the integrity of the corrugation surface occurs near the junction with the plastic ends. Even minor damage is enough to significantly reduce the vacuum cleaner's traction and suction power.
Causes of defects
The hose of a household appliance can break for several reasons:
- twisting or bending during cleaning or storage;
- excessive stretching;
- attempts to pull or carry the device by the hose;
- contact with sharp edges of objects;
- loss of elasticity due to storage at low temperatures.
A natural reason for a hose to break is also its aging and wear.
How to fix a vacuum cleaner hose with your own hands
There are several ways to repair hoses.
Repair with a simple cut
This method is suitable if the problem occurs at the junction of a corrugated pipe with a plastic end. To make repairs using tools, you will need a well-sharpened knife or hacksaw. What do we have to do? Carefully cut off the sleeve, leaving the damaged area on the side of the pipe, remove it by freeing and cleaning the plastic tip. Then treat it from the inside with sealant and carefully screw the corrugation along the thread from the side of the cut line.
Applying a bandage
If, as a result of careless operation, major damage occurs on the hose: cuts, punctures, etc., it is appropriate to carry out repairs using the applied bandage method. It is used when the sleeve is damaged in the middle (at some distance from the plastic ends).
The sequence of actions is as follows.To begin with, as in the first method, you need to carefully cut off the sleeve, only now on both sides, leaving the damaged area in the middle. A rubber tube from a bicycle about 10 centimeters long will be used as a bandage. Degrease the cut ends, completely tighten the camera onto one of them so that a small section of the hose peeks out from under it. Apply a quick-acting adhesive (such as Super Moment adhesive) to both ends of the hose, join them and pull the rubber “bandage” in the opposite direction to glue to each of the corrugated tube fragments. The joint should be strictly in the middle.
Thermal repair
For this method you will need a special industrial hair dryer and heat shrink tubing. The advantages of this approach: high quality connection without reducing the length of the hose. This repair method is universal, from the point of view of the location of the damage to the hose.
The sequence of steps is as follows:
- select a heat-shrinkable tube of suitable size;
- disconnect one of the plastic ends;
- put the heat shrink tube through the free end of the corrugation;
- Place the tube over the damaged area and use a hair dryer to evenly heat the heat shrink.
Repairing corrugations with internal conductors
If the vacuum cleaner model requires power adjustment on the handle of the working nozzle, then wires are built into the hose that send a signal from the regulator to the motor. In this case, repairing the hose is complicated by additional actions. The complete repair instructions are as follows:
- It is necessary to disassemble the holder fasteners, freeing the wire contacts.
- Release the damaged end of the sleeve from the plastic.
- Cut off the damaged corrugation without touching the conductive wires.
- At the required distance, re-solder the contacts for the fasteners.
- Assemble the holder body.
How to temporarily restore a vacuum cleaner hose
If you need to finish cleaning at any cost, and damage to the air intake hose does not allow you to do this, you can resort to temporarily restoring its functionality. Damage such as a puncture or crack can be repaired using insulating tape or tape. The repair will not take much time, but such an emergency measure will not last long either.
