Poor draft in sauna stove
Surely many lovers of bath procedures have encountered a situation where the sauna stove suffers from a draft. There may be several reasons for this problem. Some of them are the result of errors at the design stage. If you want to monitor the performance of your sauna stove yourself, you should know the basic methods for detecting and removing smoke in a steam room. You will know why there is poor draft in a sauna stove and what to do to improve it.

Main problems
When purchasing or making your own sauna stove, you will need to learn a few points on which the comfortable environment in your sauna will ultimately depend, and you will learn how to quickly establish traction. Let's consider possible problems that may cause poor draft in a sauna stove.
Pipe length
This indicator has the most important influence on the correct operation of the hood. You must know how to make it and install it correctly.
REFERENCE. The smallest distance that can be between the chimney ledge and the roof ridge is 500–700 mm. The optimal indicator is 1000 mm.
When the chimney exits lower down the slope, its upper edge must be positioned taking into account the rule: an angle of 10 degrees must be set aside from the horizontal plane at the ridge. The top edge of the chimney should be located exactly on this line. If this rule is not followed, it is likely that smoke will escape into the room.
Insufficient chimney cross-section
This reason has an impact on the amount of gas passage. Craftsmen recommend laying a brick pipe or purchasing a steel pipe, the size of which is at least 120–130 cm. If you reduce the diameter of the outlet channel, you can very likely end up with a smoky room.
IMPORTANT. The size of the hood is made in a ratio of 2/5 to the volume of the combustion chamber. If you do not follow this rule, the level of traction will be insufficient.
Short blower length
If the dimensions of the blower or ash drawer were not taken into account during the sauna stove process, this could very likely cause poor draft. This indicator is especially important if you are going to light the stove after a long break.
To eliminate this drawback, it will be necessary to completely disassemble the stove; you can add a compartment of the required size to the ash pan in the lower part of the stove.
Leaky chimney
The smoke will find an outlet in the most accessible place, therefore, if there are leaky areas in the chimney, you cannot avoid smoke in the room. Your actions will be extremely simple. It is necessary to find the place where the hood is damaged and repair the defect. Depending on the material from which the chimney is made, you can choose the appropriate method:
- If mortar spills out in the joints, simply fill them with new mortar.
- If the chimney is steel, you may need electric welding. You can also use a clamp or bandage made of bandage and clay or silicone.
Problems with the sealing of the combustion door
If the door does not fit well enough to the plane, it is quite understandable that carbon monoxide will leak out of the cracks. The simplest method of eliminating this malfunction is to attach an asbestos cord to the door, for this:
- If the door is quite thick, you can make a groove and press the cord into it.
- If you have a thin door, you can weld pieces of rod onto it, leaving a sufficient gap between them. All that remains is to fill the cavity with asbestos.
IMPORTANT. The cord should protrude slightly above the surface, thereby achieving a sealed connection.
You will need to make some adjustments to the lock.
Clogged furnace ducts
This reason is one of the most common if the necessary furnace maintenance is not performed in a timely manner. During operation, the pipe becomes clogged with a layer of soot. When condensation accumulates on the walls, this process only accelerates.
IMPORTANT. Soot can completely block the passage of gases. Don’t forget to maintain your stove chimney in a modern manner.
Other Possible Causes
Among these reasons are the following:
- The main chimney, when connecting a large number of consumers to it, may not cope with the task assigned to it.
- During long breaks in the operation of the sauna stove, condensation forms on the walls of the pipes. It heats up and subsequently evaporates, which leads to the formation of air pockets, and they block the possibility of gas passage.
How to improve draft in a sauna stove
In order to quickly light the stove and without smoke, it is necessary to warm up the pipe in order to remove cold air from it. Take several sheets of newspaper and roll them into a tube, set them on fire close to the chimney. Warm air will pass through the pipe, thereby removing cold air from it.If you have eliminated all the above reasons for poor draft, but there is no good draft, you can try to strengthen it by installing a deflector on the pipe.
REFERENCE. A deflector is a kind of umbrella, a cap made of a special shape.
After you install this element, even if the wind blows in the wrong direction, the draft in your stove will be excellent.
