Sterilizing jars in a slow cooker
In order for the seams to be stored well for the winter, the containers for them must be sterilized. Sterilization is the treatment of a product at high temperatures to destroy microorganisms. Our mothers and grandmothers used a regular kettle with boiling water or an oven for these purposes, but now there is a simple and modern way. This process can be done using a slow cooker.

How to properly sterilize jars in a slow cooker
How to sterilize empty jars in a slow cooker? Before starting sterilization, you should inspect the container from all sides; there should not be a single crack or chip. Even a small defect can cause the jar to burst during steaming, or after sealing it can cause the lid to swell or even break off.
Then they must be washed thoroughly. For cleaning, it is best to use regular soda. Mustard powder is also good.
Every housewife has these substances, and thanks to their properties they will provide ideal cleaning. Apply the soda with a clean sponge or piece of gauze; rub the neck of the container especially carefully. Then the jar is thoroughly rinsed under running water.
Is it possible to sterilize jars in a slow cooker? Of course, this is a completely simple process consisting of a few basic points:
- First, thoroughly wash not only the container, but also the multicooker bowl.
- Pour several glasses of water into the multicooker bowl; you can also place lids for jars inside. Close the lid of the multicooker and let the water boil.
- Next, place the steamer on the bowl and place the jars with the neck down. If the jars are small, then several of them can be sterilized at a time.
- On the multicooker control panel, select and set the “Steaming” or “Boiling” mode. For small (half-liter) jars, 5-7 minutes are enough, and large (liter) jars should be sterilized for about 15 minutes.
- At the end of the regime, we take out the jars. This must be done very carefully, with both hands using a towel or clean oven mitts.
- We place the jars upside down on a clean and dry towel so that all the water drains out and they dry completely. After this, you can start filling them with the blank.
Important! If the multicooker does not have the indicated modes, use the mode for cooking pilaf, soup or baking. The basis of this process is boiling water.
Sterilization of jars with blanks
How to sterilize jars in a slow cooker with ingredients? A huge plus of the device is that it can sterilize even finished products. After this treatment, the seams will be stored longer, and the products will retain their beneficial properties. The same modes are used for this, only it is important to set the correct time. Place a clean towel or cloth at the bottom of the bowl.
The lids are not screwed on, but simply placed on top of the jars. The workpieces must be rolled up immediately after sterilization.
In almost all recipes, the seals are left to cool for 24 hours, turned upside down and wrapped in a warm blanket (this additionally sterilizes the area where the lid meets the jar). But some types of sterilized canned food, for example mushrooms, are recommended to be cooled very quickly. This is necessary to maintain the consistency and natural color of the products. To do this, the seams are placed on the balcony or placed in a cellar or cold storage room.
Why is it better to sterilize jars in a slow cooker than in the oven?
If you compare sterilizing jars in a slow cooker versus doing it in the oven, then the advantage of the oven method is its size. At one time you can sterilize 8-10 half-liter jars and up to 4 three-liter jars, but the disadvantage is the long heating of the oven.
However, the advantages of sterilization in a multicooker are as follows:
- Simplicity;
- Warm-up speed;
- High quality sterilization.
As you can see, the process of sterilizing jars in a multicooker is simple and does not require much effort and time. It doesn’t matter what model of multicooker you have, you just need to choose the right mode. Happy preparations!
