Bioptron lamp: indications and contraindications for use
What are Bioptron lamps? Bioptron lamps are devices that treat burns, rheumatological and skin diseases by exposing them to special light; used in the field of medicine and cosmetology. Some users use Bioptron lamps at home. These units are produced by Zepter, a global manufacturer of medical and healthy lifestyle products. The first official use of Bioptron lamps in Russia was recorded in 1995. Since then, the popularity of devices both in Russia and abroad began to grow rapidly. This was due to the effectiveness of the Bioptron lamps themselves, as well as the many studies supporting the effectiveness of light therapy. They say that the emitted glow of the lamps accelerates healing and tissue regeneration.
Since the invention of the Bioptron lamp, the manufacturing company Zepter has developed several types. Their differences are in power, dimensions, weight, configuration, filters, as well as in purpose (for independent use at home/for professional use in medical institutions). The manufacturer's warranty for each Bioptron lamp is 5 years.

Types of Bioptron lamps. There are three types of device:
- Mobile/home (used by users for self-treatment/prevention at home, mobile/portable, easy to use, stylish appearance, light weight, compact, small power, includes a floor stand for greater ease of use)
- Tabletop medium (used in SPA salons and some medical institutions, less often they can be found at home, installed on a table, you can change the angle, inclination and height, more powerful models are used in the treatment of minor diseases, average power, easy to use)
- Professional (the largest, heaviest and most powerful models, they also have the largest filter diameter, are used in large medical institutions, stationary, installed on a special stand around which they rotate, their design resembles a spotlight, needed for the treatment of large affected areas)
Operating principle of the Bioptron lamp. Living organisms have been using light for their purposes for billions of years. The most striking example is plants and ultraviolet radiation. However, other organisms also use light in a unique way - penetrating into cells, it accelerates metabolism and other processes in them, that is, cells work faster if light hits them.
At its core, a Bioptron lamp is just a lamp. It also emits light, but differs in a special optical unit. In it, standard light, similar to sunlight, changes its characteristics. Firstly, it is deprived of the ultraviolet spectrum. Ultraviolet radiation in large quantities is harmful to living organisms, which is why it is used in sterilizers - with sufficient power it burns microorganisms. Further, the characteristics of light change - polarization, polychromaticity and incoherence, and its energy also decreases. Next will be an explanation of what and why happens to the light in the optical unit.
Polarization. Roughly speaking, this is the direction in which photons of light propagate (vectors of change in electromagnetic fields). There are several types of polarization, for example, the standard one is linear. In the optical block, the standard polarization of 95% of the light is converted into circular polarization. This is done so that light penetrates better into the tissues and cells of the body.
Polychromaticity. From a school physics course: light is the radiation of electromagnetic waves (photons), they also move in waves, due to different wavelengths we perceive different colors (short wavelengths are ultraviolet radiation, long wavelengths are infrared radiation). Different waves penetrate better through different objects. Also, waves of different lengths provide a comprehensive effect. Due to this, the Bioptron lamp is used for various diseases.
Incoherence. Classic light is emitted at varying and inconsistent intensities, but the Bioptron lamp is incoherent. This means that it is emitted at a constant intensity. Incoherence concentrates light exposure, causing tissue to heal faster. There is no risk of burns.
Low energy. Burns and pathological diseases are caused by exposure to high-density light flux. Light with a large amount of energy penetrates the cells, where the energy interacts with the atoms of the body - as a result, mutations or overheating of tissues occur. The luminous flux density emitted by the Bioptron lamp is 2.4 Joules per square centimeter. This is within the safe range, so you cannot get pathology or burns from the Bioptron lamp.
Light modified by a lamp is healing for humans.Getting into cells, it accelerates the processes occurring in them, so wounds heal faster/tissues are restored.
Indications for use of the Bioptron lamp. Use the device to treat:
- Scars/ulcers
- Infiltrates
- Cramps/pain in muscles, joints
- Herpes
- Neurodermatitis
- Other skin wounds (including after surgery)
Additionally, light therapy can be prescribed for gastritis, purulent formations, abscesses, boils, dermatitis, inflammation, sprains, bursitis, osteochondrosis, arthritis, stroke, myositis, systemic scleroderma, tendinitis, allergies, neurogenic, psychological and other diseases, and most importantly - for the treatment of burns and abrasions. In these cases, the light flux is directed directly to the damaged area (or to the surface of the skin over the damaged area).
Contraindications to the use of the Bioptron lamp. Do not use the Bioptron lamp if the patient:
- Acute infection/disease
- Inflammatory process
- Heat
- Malignant growths on and under the skin
- Tuberculosis
- Cerebral circulation is impaired
The use of the device is prohibited in some cases of asthma, as well as lymphadenitis, photodermatosis, liver cirrhosis, autoimmune hepatitis and other diseases of internal organs.
