Is it possible to install air conditioning on the balcony? How to do this correctly?
A modern air conditioner can literally do everything: from high-quality temperature regulation to complete humidification of the atmosphere. But in order for all functions to be performed correctly, high-quality installation is necessary. In the following article we will talk about the specifics of mounting an air conditioner on a loggia - is it possible, how to do it, and the main installation features. Go!

Air conditioning unit on the balcony - design
All models of stationary cooling systems have 2 components: one is installed inside the room, and the second is installed outside, most often on the facade of the house. The components are connected to each other by tubes through which freon flows.
An increase or decrease in temperature occurs due to the movement of refrigerant through the tubes of the device. It absorbs or gives off heat, moving from one physical form to another (from gas to liquid, and vice versa).
Manufacturers recommend mounting the indoor unit closer to the ceiling, since most of the air flow accumulates there.It is also necessary to adhere to one more important rule - the installation of the air conditioning system should be closer to the facade of the house in order to minimize the length of contact between the two components of the model.
But what to do when installation on an external wall is not possible? That's right - install an air conditioner right on the balcony.
A few more reasons why it is beneficial to install an external air conditioner unit on the balcony
Sometimes there is a situation where you can’t install an external system anywhere at all. Here are the main reasons:
- the air conditioner spoils the appearance of the building;
- installation is prohibited due to the historical status of the structure;
- technical problems prevent the installation of an external structure on the street;
- There is no permission to mount a split system directly on the wall.
In such cases, if the air conditioner is installed directly on the balcony, then the external unit is placed even on the glazed part.
Installing an outdoor air conditioner unit on a balcony, among other things, has a number of undeniable advantages:
- the absence of high-altitude work saves money and time;
- the housing is always protected from rain or snow;
- the distance between the component parts of the air conditioner is noticeably reduced;
- simplified maintenance and repair if necessary.
However, an air conditioner on a balcony with glazing also has its negative sides. Here is their list.
Is it possible to install air conditioning on the balcony and what contradictions are there?
On an open (unglazed) loggia, everything is still clear - the air conditioner is installed without problems or any shortcomings.
An open room has a constant flow of fresh air and active circulation of the atmosphere - installing an air conditioner through the balcony will not cause overheating of the equipment.Consider only one point - reduce the length of the block connection.
A different position arose when installing an air conditioner on a balcony with glazing.
This option completely contradicts the manufacturers' recommendations. For free air supply, an open area is needed, which, unfortunately, does not exist in such a situation.
To prevent equipment from overheating and shutting down in an unexpected situation, the owner needs to forcefully ensure high-quality air circulation in the system. This means that all the doors must open during active operation of the device, and the outdoor unit of the air conditioner on the loggia itself is installed near one of them.
Also, a large building can cause discomfort to residents due to noise. The sound, reflected from the glass of the balcony, will be reflected even more strongly in the living room, but the intensity of such sound depends on the power of the model itself - this option is not critical for everyone.
The best solution when installing an air conditioner on a loggia is to remove the glass frames for the operating season of the device (summer). When finished, everything returns to its place. The procedure does not require much time and resources, especially when the entire balcony is decorated with PVC inserts.
One of the additional ways to attach an external air conditioner unit to a loggia is a parapet. The entire system is placed on brackets. Legally, this is not a façade, so it can be installed freely. The main thing is in the place where the sun's rays fall the least.
In this format there are no problems with air supply. But no one is safe from the fact that some block of ice will quickly “move down” a block from the balcony. To prevent this from happening, secure the visor over the external system.
The technical installation rules stipulate one important point - if your air conditioner weighs more than 30 kg, then you cannot install it on the railing. Even if you weld additional structures, you will not get away with a fine.
If you have only one balcony, but you need to cool several rooms at once, then buy a multi-split system: you can attach several indoor units to one external one. There are no problems or restrictions in this procedure.
How to install an air conditioner on a balcony - the ideal solution
The most common installation method is on the wall. It is also the most ineffective from the point of view of device operation. And that's why:
Firstly, the air will warm up greatly both on the balcony itself and in the room. When the temperature reaches +45, the air conditioner automatically turns off - it is technically unable to work under such conditions.
Secondly, in a given module location it is necessary to keep the windows open at all times. The only option that will somehow keep the cooling working is to remove the glazing in the summer, but it doesn’t work at other times of the year, so it’s not relevant. Let's look at another way to install an external air conditioner unit on the balcony.
Is it possible to install air conditioning on the balcony?
We will not analyze the example with parapets and will only touch on the internal method. If your loggia has not only glass, but also insulation, install a split system on the floor. It’s best to go to one of the corners of the room.
A conventional system takes air from behind and to the sides and passes it forward, so we need to maintain an even distribution of the air mass so that warm air does not mix with cold air.To reduce noise, we will additionally “pack” our outer casing in a box firmly attached to the floor.
What are the advantages of the installation method:
- reliable design;
- free air transfer;
- since we dismantle one of the walls in the place where the air is released, we minimize the heating of the block;
- low noise when packing the unit into a box.
The correct installation of the system on the loggia is as follows:
- Preparing the space for the future outdoor unit: cut off part of the wall for air circulation, where the air conditioner will be located.
- We weld metal corners to place the housing, and we will attach the block itself to anchors. This circuit will both reduce vibration and make room for condensation.
- We place the module on ready-made stands.
- We install a soundproofing box.
- We drill holes for the tubes both in the box and in the wall.
- We connect the internal and external modules with a tube containing freon.
- We cover the communications with a channel cable.
- We fix the drainage.
- We check the system.
After installation, within 2-3 days you can analyze the operation for noise and cooling quality and make adjustments.
