What is a pod coffee machine?
The pod coffee machine appeared on the market relatively recently, but has already managed to win the hearts of coffee lovers. The prototype for its creation was the popular horn model. In addition to the modified design of the horn, manufacturers took a new approach to the process of preparing raw materials.
To prepare a cup of drink, you no longer need to grind beans, measure out a portion and compact it in a cone. A special “tablet” is loaded into a pod coffee machine – a pod, which contains a measured portion of coffee.

What is a pod?
This is ground and roasted coffee pressed into a tablet, designed to prepare one serving. The pods are made using complex technology in factory conditions from selected green grains, which are processed during the production process.
Roasted and ground beans are pressed into pods (paper bags with perforations) and packaged in a sealed metallized wrapper. Then an inert gas is pumped into the bag, thanks to which all the properties of the coffee are preserved for a long time. The packaging is round in shape and weighs 7–9 grams.
Reference! The inert gas does not come into contact with the compressed coffee and is absolutely safe for health, including when opening the bag before preparation. The pods can be stored for 2 years.
What types of pods are there?
The production process for coffee pods from different companies is almost the same, but they may differ:
- To size. The diameter of the tablet ranges from 44 to 55 mm and depends on the brand of coffee machine. For example: the E.S.E system will require the smallest pod, and the Senseo will require the largest one.
- By type of packaging. Can be hard or soft.
- According to the method of roasting coffee. The result is a strong, medium or light drink.
- Taste. They can be either with one additive (vanilla, caramel, chocolate, etc.) or with a bouquet of several flavors.
Often, the disadvantages of using coffee pods include the inability to independently regulate the strength of the drink.
Attention! Coffee from identical pods is always the same. By purchasing a pack of 100 pieces, you will receive 100 cups of the same drink. Its color, taste, strength and aroma will not change during the cooking process!
Where can I use a pod coffee machine?
Before purchasing a new product, you must clearly understand that this device is not intended for continuous operation from morning to evening. For these purposes, a more expensive and complex unit is better suited.
A pod coffee machine is indispensable:
- At home. It will save time in the morning, when all family members, no matter what, want a cup of an invigorating drink.
- In the office. Does not clog, does not require constant cleaning and special knowledge of operation.
- In a small bar or cafe. It will make the work of staff easier and increase the speed of customer service, while the quality will always be at its best.
How does a pod coffee machine work?
The operating principle is similar to automatic coffee makers: heated water under pressure passes through the pod, taking away not only the aroma, but also all the beneficial substances from the portioned and compressed product. The finished coffee flows down the gutter into the cup, and the used pod is easily removed and thrown away, without the device getting dirty. The whole process takes a few minutes.
More expensive models provide for preparing coffee for two cups at the same time, as well as changing several modes.
How to properly refill a pod coffee machine?
You need to fill a special container with water (standard capacity is 2–3 liters). Then remove the pod from the metallized packaging and place it in a special filter that is inserted into the coffee machine.
Now, with one button, you can start the automatic cooking program. After finishing work, a signal will sound.
Attention! After opening the package, check the integrity of the pod; the service life of the coffee machine depends on this.
And a few more operating secrets:
- Throw away used pods immediately after use.
- Periodically wash the removable filter and spout of the device. The frequency depends on the intensity of use.
- When using hard water, do not neglect descaling agents.
The advantages of a pod coffee machine are in its characteristics:
- Sufficient strength. Since the machine only works with ground coffee, it rarely breaks down.
- Ease of use. No special skills required. The unit will do everything automatically, just add water and load the pod.
- Cooking speed. Coffee brews much faster than other coffee machines. Average speed – 30 seconds.
- Drink quality. The prepared coffee is stable, its taste does not depend on the skill of the operator. And the quality, thanks to the pressing technology used in the production of pods, is not inferior to the classic drink.
- Compactness. The small size allows you to place the coffee machine even in a small kitchen.
