How to save on energy consumption with household appliances
Due to the regular increase in the cost of consumed electricity, the problem of saving it is particularly acute today. There are many known methods and tricks that can significantly reduce electricity consumption. But in most cases, these techniques are either illegal or ineffective and difficult to implement.

What household appliances consume a lot of electricity?
Among the well-known household appliances, there are a number of items that are distinguished by particularly high consumption. These traditionally include:
- Refrigerators.
- Electric stoves of all brands.
- Washing machines.
- Heaters of one type or another.
- Electric kettles and other units.
The leading positions among the most energy-intensive equipment are traditionally occupied by refrigerators, which operate around the clock with short breaks when switched off. The average level of energy consumption of various models of refrigeration units is from 250 to 450 kW per year. Next comes an electric stove, consuming from 4 to 8 kW/hour (over the course of a year the amount will increase depending on the intensity of use of the device).
Note! For washing machines, the amount of energy consumption is determined in a special way (based on one wash). For most models it ranges from 1 to 1.2 kW.
Oil or electric radiators (heaters), as well as electric kettles that are completely unnecessary in the household, are characterized by relatively high consumption.
How to use them to save money
The energy consumption of a refrigerator depends on factors such as ambient temperature and the reliability of sealing of the unit’s chambers. This figure can be reduced if you carefully monitor the rubber gaskets and prevent overheating of the air within the kitchen space. The electric stove can be turned off approximately 5 minutes before the dish is completely ready (this will not affect its quality in any way due to the high inertia of the heating element).
When using a washing unit, it is recommended to choose economical modes for processing laundry (with not very high water temperatures).
Additional Information! If there is a multi-tariff energy meter, some housewives prefer to run the washing program at night.
During the cold season, it is also advisable to turn on a household heater during periods of minimum tariff metering (day or night, for example). It is better to abandon the electric kettle altogether and switch to boiling water using cheaper gas.
How much can you save by following the recommendations?
When using the considered energy saving techniques, the total savings can be expressed by the following average indicators:
- If the washing unit uses more economical laundry processing modes (with lower temperatures), it is possible to save approximately 0.5 kW at a time.
- In the mode of careful energy consumption when using a stove, you can save from 2.5 to 5 kW per month (based on cooking on one burner once a day).
- Savings on a heater turned on during periods of minimum tariff metering depend on the power of the model used and its type. Usually this figure does not exceed 5-10 percent.
In conclusion, we note that a multi-tariff meter with electronic control installed in an apartment can provide significant energy savings. Due to the proper distribution of switching times for various household appliances, the total efficiency indicator in this case reaches 14 percent.
