Why do Korean housewives need 2 refrigerators - many are surprised, but then take note
If you ever visit a Korean, the first thing that might really surprise you is the presence of two refrigerators at once. Yes, even in our homes you can see so much equipment, but often these are separate freezer and refrigerator compartments, which is especially important when the family is large, and for the winter they are used to freezing various products or purchasing them a month in advance. However, it is rare to find two refrigerators among Russians, since one is enough for us.
But why is this practice so widespread among Koreans? Do they really eat so much that they are missing one standard device? The answers to these questions are very simple - kimchi!

Kimchi is the national Korean dish
It’s unlikely that anyone is not familiar with this incredibly delicious food. But in Korea they use it constantly, every day, sometimes instead of bread. Local residents say that kimchi is one of the main symbols of the country. And at the beginning of the 21st century they began to promote it among tourists as an attraction.
Kimchi is a spicy pickled (fermented) vegetable, primarily Chinese cabbage. Additionally, red pepper, herbs, garlic, ginger, cruciferous leaves, radish slices, radishes, cucumbers, eggplants and other vegetables are added here. There are many cooking options, but one thing is true here - the dish tastes absolutely amazing.
Kimchi is a low-calorie food because it is made from vegetables. Contains a lot of fiber. Koreans believe that consumption promotes weight loss, that is, they consider this dish to be dietary. Kimchi with the addition of spicy seasonings is an excellent cold remedy. It is also used to smooth out the effects of alcohol intoxication, since fermented products are considered an excellent hangover cure.
Kimchi refrigerator
This is where we come to the question of why Koreans still need two refrigerators in the kitchen. It turns out that one of them is designed specifically for storing kimchi, and it, of course, differs from the chambers that we are used to.
This is a special device that does not look much different from our refrigerators, but is designed specifically to meet the storage requirements of the Korean national dish, facilitating various fermentation processes. That is, in a regular unit the conditions are completely different: kimchi becomes sour within a week.
There are separate boxes in the refrigerator where, in fact, the prepared dish is placed.
In a special device, kimchi can be stored for up to 4 months without losing its quality. It maintains a cooler temperature inside, with high humidity and less air flow. Some products are even equipped with a UV sterilizer function.
Now, when you look at a Korean’s home, you will know for sure that a second refrigerator is needed for kimchi, since they prepare it in such huge quantities that it simply won’t fit in a regular one.
