Materials and tools for work
First of all, you need to prepare materials and tools, for this you will need:
- beam;
- boards for the frame;
- padding polyester;
- plywood;
- fabric for covering;
- sofa legs;
- Staples;
- self-tapping screws;
- glue;
- screwdriver;
- Bulgarian;
- electric jigsaw;
- marker;
- roulette.
When everything is ready, production begins.
Preparatory process
First you need to draw a design for the sofa. Determining the dimensions will depend on the volume of the refrigerator, as well as the height of the armrests, seat depth and some other parameters.
When the project is created, you need to pay attention to the materials used. To make the lower part of the frame, experts recommend choosing timber or sections of profile pipe. This way the frame will be more reliable and stable.
Reference! If you choose synthetic padding for the internal filling, you need to purchase material that is not loose and rather thick.The ideal thickness for a homemade sofa would be a padding polyester of 20 cm, otherwise it will quickly need to be replaced, and for this it is necessary to dismantle the entire structure.
As a rule, the following is used as upholstery:
- Genuine leather is the most durable material, gives solidity to furniture, but is expensive and requires special tools for work.
- Leatherette is a budget analogue of leather, quite reliable and stylish. Among the disadvantages is that it is afraid of mechanical damage.
- Velor is soft to the touch, great as upholstery, but has a significant drawback - it is difficult to remove stains.
- Chenille - the material is convenient for novice furniture makers because it does not slip or stretch, while having good wear resistance.
- Jacquard is a reliable material similar to silk. When choosing, you need to take into account that the material slides and you need to make some effort to make a neat lining.
- Tapestry is a dense material with a pattern. The disadvantages include the fear of direct sunlight, since the fabric fades quite quickly.
Sofa from an old refrigerator: step-by-step instructions
First of all, you need to throw out all unnecessary parts and install some elements:
- A rectangular frame is assembled as a refrigerator holder; it is made from boards of the required size.
- Then, when the frame is made, it needs to be strengthened with transverse beams; a plywood sheet is attached to the bottom of the frame with self-tapping screws as a base.
- Afterwards, the legs of the future sofa are attached to the frame.
- The door is removed from the refrigerator and one of the side parts of the unit is cut off with a grinder. The top and bottom will act as armrests.
- Now the refrigerator needs to be fixed to the assembled frame; this can be done using self-tapping screws.
- Afterwards, the entire structure is covered with padding polyester, which is selected taking into account personal preferences.
- Next, the creative stage of work begins. Using a sewing machine you need to sew a cover from finishing material. These covers, as a rule, are sewn after measuring all the elements (armrest, back, seat) of the sofa and are fixed to the assembled furniture using zippers.
- An alternative is to secure the upholstery material using a stapler. This method makes it possible to fix the material evenly on the surface in a fairly short period of time.
The sofa refrigerator is ready. You just need to put it in place in the chosen room, probably even making a special podium for it, since furniture made with your own hands is bound to arouse the pride of the owner and the envy of people who do not have this original piece of furniture.
