What is No Frost in the refrigerator
Refrigerators have become a must-have appliance in any kitchen. Without them, it is impossible to store modern products for a long time, and this is necessary in the conditions of the modern pace of life.
Progress has gone even further - refrigerators with a special system have appeared - No Frost, the presence of which implies “self-service” of the unit without the need for monthly manual defrosting.

No Frost - how it works and what is the difference
A refrigerator marked with the prefix “No Frost” has a built-in special fan, which, when liquid accumulates, simply blows it into the compartment. From it, in turn, it evaporates at a certain temperature.
In addition, such a fan ensures a constant temperature inside the refrigerator, without changes. The compressor also operates periodically at preset intervals, just like in a drip device system (previous generation of self-defrosting devices).
Only freezers are equipped with a drip system. A unit with normal food storage at low temperatures still has to be defrosted periodically. The No Frost system allows you to completely avoid this problem, just occasionally wipe the shelves in the refrigerator.
Attention! For successful operation of the device, it is necessary to wipe it completely dry after washing to avoid increased humidity. This may result in food spoilage.
There are 2 types of modern refrigeration device models:
- Frost Free – a system in which the main chamber operates on a drip device, and the refrigeration chamber is equipped with a know-frost system;
- Full No Frost – when both cameras work in a human-independent No Frost system.
As with any technology, the know frost system in modern refrigerators has advantages and disadvantages.
The advantages include the uniformity of temperature over the entire area of the chamber, regardless of the frequency of opening the door or placing warm dishes with dishes that have not yet cooled down inside. Also, constant air circulation provided by fans promotes rapid cooling, and freezers freeze food faster.
Attention! All models of the modern generation of refrigerators have a control panel on the door, with which you can adjust the required temperature in the main chamber and the intensity of freezing.
The disadvantages of using a device with the No Frost system is increased electricity consumption, high noise level due to the operating fan, high cost of the unit and reduced size of the chambers (due to voluminous internal equipment). It is also necessary to remember that if the fan creates constant air circulation, then open products will ventilate faster when open.
Smart frost system
"Smart" literally translated as “smart”, this means that a device with such a system reacts to the degree of freezing of products. It prevents frost from forming not only on the walls of the refrigerator, but also on stored food products, which makes freezing more gentle. Also, the internal structure of a refrigerator with a smart frost system is more ergonomic.Shelves and built-in containers are as spacious as possible, made of high-quality plastic or glass.
Low frost system
With this cooling system in the freezer, the cold air is distributed evenly thanks to two walls between which the refrigerant is distributed. There are no tubes inside, which prevents the formation of local zones with lower temperatures. Condensation is not released as intensively, this allows you to service the refrigerator less frequently than is required for a conventional device, without special cooling systems. Approximately once every six months, manufacturers of refrigeration devices with this system recommend artificially defrosting the device by removing ice from the walls.
Total No Frost System
Unlike the previous systems described, this smart program is aimed at long-term storage of products in the freezer without completely freezing them until ice cubes form. The only drawback – due to one refrigerator on the upper and lower chambers, air from vegetables or especially smelling products from above can easily penetrate into the products from below.
Caring for a refrigerator with this system
Regardless of which refrigerator the buyer chooses with which system, it is necessary to carefully care for the device to extend its service life. Does everyone remember how long ZIL units lasted?
This was achieved not only thanks to high-quality parts, but also due to careful monthly care of the item. Our grandmothers and mothers set aside a special day off to thoroughly defrost the refrigerator. Then this was done to remove a thick layer of ice. Now it is necessary to carry out this procedure for reasons of hygiene.
Despite the fact that manufacturers praise their products with the No Frost system as a universal unit without the need for defrosting, once every six months it is necessary to carry out preventive “breaks” in the operation of the device. To do this you need:
- set the freezing temperature to minimum;
- let the refrigerator run at this temperature for about an hour;
- disconnect the device from the power supply;
- thoroughly wash the walls and shelves; if the parts are disassembled, remove them, wash them, wipe them dry and put them back;
- After washing all the internal parts, wipe the inside with a cloth (preferably microfiber) and let it stand with the doors open for about another hour.
It is recommended to carry out this procedure at least once every six months. To do this, you need to make sure in advance that there are no products in the freezer that are unsuitable for re-freezing, because. The time spent cleaning the refrigerator will result in partial or complete defrosting of the food.
To buy or not to buy?
Any buyer of refrigerators faces such thoughts in advance of the purchase or directly on the sales floor. The consultant can talk about the advantages of a particular model, but, as a rule, remains silent about the disadvantages.
Therefore, you should know exactly what you can get under the tempting and modern sign of “No Frost”:
- high-quality, but more expensive equipment;
- it will make noise, but at the same time keep food fresh for a long time;
- it does not need to be defrosted, but must be washed once every six months;
- It is better to store food in such a refrigerator closed.
Models with such a system are very popular among housewives who like to prepare frozen food for future use or for the winter.Simply boil or wash the mushrooms and berries, put them in bags or special containers and close them in the freezer. The dry freezing system will quickly turn fresh fruits, vegetables and berries into winter supplies.
Another advantage of this type of refrigerator is that increased internal humidity will not be relevant for residents of the southern regions. It also makes no sense to purchase such a system for those who are accustomed to placing food strictly at certain levels in the refrigerator in order to avoid spoilage. There is only one conclusion - a regular refrigerator is good, but the No Frost system is better and simpler.
Of course it’s better with no-frost! We just took a total no-frost from Indesit and it’s simply many, many times better than the old refrigerators
This is what I like about my whirlpool. No matter where you put it, everything will be preserved well. And it will not become covered with an ice crust!
