How to replace a refrigerator if the electricity is cut off at the dacha
Nowadays it is impossible to imagine life without a refrigerator. But sometimes you have to not only imagine, but actually do without it. You arrive at the dacha, and there are power outages. What to do? There is an answer: use the accumulated experience, which will teach you how to replace the refrigeration unit.

Alternative refrigerators
There are many ways to create suitable conditions for storing food.
IMPORTANT! Some options will require you to purchase appropriate equipment or stock up on ice in advance.
Cooler bag
Perhaps the most popular way to preserve food is a cooler bag. It is useful to have it to use when necessary.
This special bag works using cooling elements or cold accumulators that are in a liquid, crystalline or gel state. Manufacturers produce products of different sizes. This allows everyone to choose a model of suitable dimensions to fit all the products.
But a cooler bag can help out if necessary only if you have the required number of batteries. They will have to be purchased in advance and kept in the freezer. In the event of a power failure, such batteries maintain a low temperature in the bag.
IMPORTANT! The bag will allow you to maintain a low temperature inside for a day, after which you will need to replace the batteries.
Atmospheric refrigerator
Don't have a special bag at hand? No problem! We arrange cooling using the physical properties of substances.
If you know physics well, you can easily understand the principle of operation of an atmospheric refrigerator. It is based on the concepts of dew point and water evaporation temperature. Despite the complexity of explaining the process, the product is quite easy to make using available materials.
- Fill a large bowl with water.
- Place the food in the tank, close it tightly with a lid, and place it in a bowl of water.
- Cover the lid of the tank with an easily wet towel and dip its ends into the water in the basin.
- Place the structure in the shade, for the best effect, preferably in a draft.
- Monitor the availability of water and replenish the supply if necessary.
IMPORTANT! This method is easy to implement, but is ineffective when placed on the sunny side and at high air temperatures, since the design will reduce the temperature inside by only 10–15 degrees relative to the outside environment.
What else can you use instead of a refrigerator?
A real dacha has everything necessary for a normal existence; you don’t even need a refrigerator. Look closely and you will find many food storage devices. Use ancient methods - they have been tested for centuries and can help in our time in the absence of high-tech devices and devices.
Glacier
In this case, we are not talking about a real glacier or a piece of iceberg. But at the same time the piece of ice must be quite large to provide cooling. In this case, you will need to break off the ice on the river if we are talking about the winter period. In the summer, the situation is more complicated; you should stock up on ice in advance.
ADVICE. Ordinary cubes from the refrigerator cannot solve the problem. For convenience, you should pour water into bottles, fill them 9/10 full and freeze them.
If you have frequent power outages, stock up on these bottles in advance. As soon as the refrigerator stops working, put them in a food container. This will help preserve food longer and extend its shelf life.
Cellar
The traditional way is to keep food in the cellar. This is what our ancestors did when modern units did not yet exist. This is a logical approach to solving the problem, since in the lower layers the air warms up less, and the creation of artificial shade prevents food from spoiling quickly. If you are lucky and there is a cellar on the site, you can use it.
If it is not available, you can make a small storage area that imitates a cellar.
REFERENCE. To do this, just dig a hole 2 meters deep, line it with boards and cover it with a lid on top. A small refrigerator will always be at hand.
Well
Another old-fashioned method that is still effective today.
IMPORTANT! Well water is very cold, which helps achieve the refrigerator effect.
Of course, you can simply put the food in the bucket into the water. But it is better to do this in compliance with a number of simple rules.
- Lower only perishable food, a lot won’t fit in the bucket.
- Bucket should not be completely immersed in water, just lower it by 2/3.
- Place provisions in plastic bags and Cover the bucket with an airtight lid to prevent water from entering.
- You should not place several buckets in the well at once.It will be inconvenient for you to take them out, and the food may fall out.
I think that now all modern refrigerators have good autonomy. We have indesite in our dacha, even if the power suddenly goes out, I don’t worry at all.
We specifically took a Whirlpool refrigerator to the dacha, because when the power goes out, it retains the cold for a long time, even in the freezer it does not have time to melt anything.
Of course, there were situations when the electricity was turned off at the dacha, but in these cases we still used our Indesit refrigerator, fortunately it has good autonomy (it retains the cold well).
