Installation of a coarse water filter
Before entering residential buildings, water always passes through a whole system of filters from municipal wastewater treatment plants. But despite this, many chemical particles larger than 10 microns remain in it. Their impact negatively affects human health, the operation of household appliances that consume water, and plumbing. Installing coarse filters will prevent them from entering the house.

Main types of coarse water filters
Pre-filters are divided based on many factors of their design, installation and purpose.
Worth knowing: If a pre-treatment element is not installed where water enters the home, many manufacturers of expensive household appliances and plumbing fixtures refuse to provide a warranty on their products.
Depending on the degree to which cleaning is carried out, there are:
- Single stage;
- Two-stage;
- Three-stage filters.
First-stage filtration only involves removing particles of rust, sediment and sand from the water flow. While the second stage of cleaning helps to get rid of organic elements, chlorine and odors, the third removes iron particles and makes it softer.
Taking into account how the settling tank is placed, in which the filtered contaminants are collected, the filter can be oblique or straight. A water reservoir installed perpendicular to the water is called straight, and oblique is one placed at a certain slope.
Depending on the type of filtering element, devices can be:
- Corrugated;
- Mesh;
- Winding.
If the filter does not have a cartridge, it is called a mud filter. Their degree of filtration is much lower. This is partially compensated by the low cost and ease of operation of the device. Cartridges must be periodically replaced with new ones, while mud collectors can simply be removed with a lid and washed.
Features of installing different types of devices
How to properly install a coarse water filter? Straight mesh filters are the most common and easiest to install. The work algorithm is as follows:
- The installation location is selected. Horizontal installation and areas with good accessibility are preferred. This allows convenient access to the sump for cleaning it in the future.
- A section of the pipeline is cut to fit the size of the device and its additional elements.
- Threads are applied to the pipes so that the components can be securely fastened.
- The connecting parts and the filter itself are installed.
- The water turns on.
The same sequence applies to cartridge systems, with the only peculiarity that the reservoir where dirt particles accumulate is much larger in such devices, which accordingly requires more free space to be provided for it.
Rules for installing a coarse filter in a country house
When installing each type of device, you must take into account its specifics and act in accordance with the instructions.Ignoring the rules will lead to incorrect installation and complete inoperability of the filter.
It is important: Regardless of what device will be installed, the water supply to the house must be shut off before starting work.
Rules applicable to any type of appliance:
- The filter is always placed at the point in the system where water begins to flow directly into the house;
- When installed horizontally, the sump of the device should be located at the bottom;
- The filtration element is placed in the direction of water flow immediately after the shut-off valve;
- The device is installed in front of the water flow meter;
- Vertical installation is allowed only in areas where water flows from top to bottom;
- The movement must correspond to the arrow indicated on each filter;
- All structural elements must match each other in terms of parameters such as pipe diameter, permissible pressure, etc.
It is important: Immediately after installation, run the water briefly and pay attention to the appearance of even minor leaks. This will help to identify whether errors were made during the work and promptly eliminate them.
A properly installed pre-filter will significantly improve the quality and safety of the water used in your home.
