What is pyrolytic oven cleaning?
The oven, like any household appliance, can become clogged and dirty over time. There are many methods for cleaning contaminants, one of them is pyrolytic cleaning.

What is pyrolysis
The origin of the word “pyrolysis” comes from two ancient Greek words: pir - heat, fire; lysis - decomposition, disintegrate.
Pyrolysis is a process in which, under the influence of high temperature, fatty deposits and other organic contaminants are broken down.
The temperatures used for this method can reach around +500 degrees Celsius. This is several times higher than the “standard” temperature for cooking food.
Operating principle
As mentioned earlier, the main principle of operation is based on raising the temperature to an ultra-high level, which makes it possible to remove contaminants by burning it.
Important:
During the application of pyrolysis, unpleasant odors may form. There is no need to be afraid of this. A catalytic filter (a standard, built-in part of any commercial oven) can overcome this difficulty. Even after using pyrolysis, the filter should be cleaned according to the “standard” schedule: 1 time per 100 hours of active oven operation - it can be cleaned by standard calcination. It would be a good idea to use a kitchen hood.It is also recommended not to block the fresh air flow, so the window should be open during the cleaning process.
Application of pyrolysis:
- In order to start cleaning the oven with pyrolysis, you need to remove all the elements that can be removed from it (baking tray, grates, grate guides, etc.), everything must be removed. Removed items can be cleaned using other methods - manual cleaning or dishwasher cleaning with a special cleaning cycle.
- Next, you need to activate the pyrolysis cleaning function and wait until it finishes automatically. During this period, crackling sounds and slight “pops” may be heard from the oven - this is the decomposition of fat, and the process of its disposal (combustion to soot) begins.
- After cleaning is completed, you need to wait until the oven has lowered its temperature to room temperature and clean the internal surfaces. You can use a damp cloth or a wet kitchen towel to do this. Soot can be difficult to scrape off, then take a knife or a special tool for cleaning “hard” fat.
- Having completed the cleaning, the removed elements are inserted and the oven is ready for use again. Ready!
Some oven owners notice that the oven door may lock - this happens automatically and is designed to protect you (your hands, skin, apartment) from accidental burns or fire. The door can be opened as soon as the temperature inside drops to an “acceptable” 250 degrees Celsius. This is a built-in feature of ovens. If your door does not lock, you should contact a service center, as this can be extremely dangerous when cooking at high temperatures. Also, the absence of this protection is fraught with the risk of accidental opening of the door by a child or pet.
Features of cleaning by pyrolysis
Only owners of electric ovens can use this function - in gas versions of ovens it is difficult to “reach” a temperature of 500 degrees Celsius.
When purchasing an electric oven, it is important to pay special attention to the quality of steel that is present in the product. It must be able to withstand repeated increases to “extreme” temperatures without losing its properties. Therefore, not subject to deformation (change in physical parameters).
The same requirements must be applied to the fire-resistant glass of the door. This is especially important if a thermometer is built into the glass - check its characteristics.
Tangential mechanism - may create unusual noise. This is due to the fact that it operates at maximum power. If the sound is too loud and not natural, it is better to cancel cleaning.
It should be understood that working at maximum power consumes an increased amount of electricity - take this into account.
Precautionary measures
The precautions for using this cleaning method are strict and must be followed flawlessly!
Children and pets must not be allowed near the oven and the cabinet must not be allowed to touch (impact).
It is better not to leave the room during the cleaning process - this can protect you from an “emergency” situation and allow you to quickly respond to excesses.
It is recommended to remove items that can easily catch fire (rags, mittens for removing hot items, etc.). This precaution will protect you from potential heat leakage and, as a result, burning objects nearby.
