Why should you only put cold water in your kettle?

The cooler at work has broken down and is awaiting replacement, and now the electric kettle is constantly in use. You even have to wait for the next portion of boiling water. A colleague even jokingly suggested pouring hot water into the kettle so that it would heat up faster. And our oldest employee took the “rationalization proposal” seriously and said in a stern voice that she would not drink boiled hot water! And he doesn’t advise us. Why exactly?

I decided to find out more. It turned out that our Valentina Pavlovna was right! We will only boil water drawn from a cold tap.

Why do you need to pour cold water into a kettle?

Why centrally heated water is not suitable for boiling

The cold water that flows from our taps undergoes special purification. Therefore, it is quite suitable for either tea or soup.

What about the already heated water? On the one hand, it is the same as cold. That is, it has already passed through the filters and is stored in the same tanks.

But on the other hand, this water not only has a different temperature, but also differs in chemical composition.

Additional impurities

Reference. To maintain hot water pipes in working condition, special chemicals are used. They allow you to disinfect pipes and protect them from rust.

Particles of these substances may remain in the liquid. Of course, their maintenance is monitored and only water that contains little of this “chemistry” gets to the residents. At least not more than what is allowed under sanitary standards.

But why do we need to boil water with reagents, even if there are not very many of them, especially when we can fill the kettle from a tap with cold water. Moreover, this way you will get boiling water without unnecessary (and even harmful!) additives.

The quality requirements are lower

In general, when pouring liquid from a tap that has been heated in a boiler room, you need to treat it as technical. Because even according to sanitary standards it is considered water that we use for household or household needs.

Reference. According to sanitary standards, only cold water is considered a liquid of drinking quality. Requirements for the quality of flows from different pipes are contained in different documents, because they are higher for drinking water, and lower for technical water.

The temperature of the liquid promotes the rapid dissolution of sediments formed on the walls of the pipes. Of course, it may be small, you won’t even notice it right away. But the accumulation of even such minimal doses will not benefit the body.

What if the water is heated in a water heater?

The hot water supply is clear. What if the apartment has a gas water heater and we heat the cold water ourselves? Does this mean that it retains its drinking qualities? It turned out that answering this question is more difficult.

geyser

Neither sanitary services nor gas equipment manufacturers promise that water will retain its composition unchanged after heating. But they do not categorically indicate that drinking such water is prohibited.

This is understandable. After all, different owners have columns in different states, and the composition of impurities may be different. To ensure its suitability for drinking, it would be necessary to analyze the quality of the liquid separately for each dwelling.

At the same time, the issue of the suitability of liquid heated using a column for drinking is discussed in various forums. Copper heating tubes are questionable. More precisely, copper ions that got into the water.
Although there is no ban on such water, I think it is better to play it safe and not pour it into the kettle. Let's take care of ourselves!

Cold water is healthier for humans and for the teapot

cold water

So it turns out that cold water is cleaner in composition, and therefore healthier for humans.
Still would! After all, it contains less lead and other harmful “chemicals” - for example, polyacrylamide.

Even teapots react worse to liquids with impurities. It causes scale to quickly accumulate on the inner walls and heating element, which is difficult to remove. In addition, deposits can cause the kettle to fail faster.

By the way, As these deposits accumulate, the kettle will take longer to heat up. That is, if we want to reduce the heating time, we will achieve the opposite. And we will drink boiling water with impurities. Do you need this?

Now we will definitely heat only cold water. Moreover, thanks to the thermopot installed in the office, there is now enough boiling water for everyone.
