Hammer lubricant. What and how to lubricate a hammer drill correctly?

The hammer drill is lubricated regularly. For example, if the tool is used every day, treatment is scheduled every 3 months. Moreover, individual parts, for example, a chuck-drill, are processed every month, and in case of intensive work - weekly. How to do this is described in detail below.

Why and with what frequency is the composition applied?

The hammer drill must be processed without fail, otherwise the tool will break quite quickly. Lubrication is especially important for drills; under intense loads, it is done weekly. The main purposes of processing are:

  • counteraction to friction between mechanisms - thanks to this, the service life can be increased;
  • ensure heat dissipation - when using a hammer drill, various parts become very hot, which reduces the service life;
  • preventing the ingress of dust, moisture particles, and metal that are formed due to rubbing mechanisms.

The rotary hammer gearbox, as well as other elements of the tool, are lubricated regularly, and the frequency depends on how often the tool is used. If you use it almost daily, then you need to lubricate it every 3 months. If the tool is used approximately once a week or less, it is enough to carry out the treatment once a year.

How to lubricate a hammer drill

The answer to this question depends on which part of the mechanism we are talking about. So, there is a special lubricant for the hammer drill; you can also find products for other components, for example, for the gearbox. The basic tools for processing parts are described below.

Gearbox

This part needs to be processed most often - every 100 hours of operation. At the same time, assembling and disassembling the gearbox yourself is not easy - there is a risk of breaking the mechanism. Therefore, if you do not have the appropriate skill, it is better not to take risks.

The main way to lubricate a rotary hammer is to use the composition of the same brand that manufactured the tool itself. For example, you can purchase Bosch, Makita, Interskol and carry out processing.

There are also companies that specialize specifically in the manufacture of lubricating compounds. These are Xado, Shell and others. Another option for lubricating a hammer drill is universal compounds:

  1. Litol-24 is a frost-resistant product that is intended for friction units. Used for gearboxes and bearings. The composition includes a lithium-based thickener, so the mass is quite viscous and heat-resistant, maintaining consistency over a wide temperature range from -60 to +90°C. The composition is well fixed on the metal surface and protects it from corrosion.
  2. Solid oil is a classic lubricant, used for various mechanisms. working in conditions of high humidity, but without overheating. The operating temperature of the composition is within +70°C.

Chuck drill

Each well-known brand, for example, Makita, BOSCH, produces its own lubricant for rotary hammer drills. It fills gaps well, preventing dust from entering. You can use graphite instead, but this composition removes heat from the shank worse.

When purchasing, you need to immediately think about how to lubricate the hammer drill. No processing is carried out at the factory - it comes from production dry. Therefore, the composition must be applied after the first use. Then, if the use is very intense, every day, the product is applied weekly. It is enough to use 1 g of the composition and apply it evenly to the surface.

Bearings

The bearings can be treated with the same method used to lubricate the rotary hammer gearbox. It is recommended to use solid oil or the universal composition Litol-24. It works in a wide temperature range, so it is better to use it.

Collector unit

For this part of the mechanism, it is recommended to use a special silicone composition (liquid base). Its use reduces friction and improves contact. Therefore, the mechanism sparks less and its service life is extended. Silicone lubricants are produced under the same brands as the hammer drills themselves.

How to properly lubricate the gearbox

Now it’s clear how to lubricate the hammer drill inside, all that remains is to figure out how to carry out the treatment correctly. We can look at the example of a gearbox. To work you will need:

  • screwdrivers (set);
  • clean cloth;
  • solvent or gasoline;
  • lubricant composition.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Clean the tool from dust.
  2. Disassemble the cartridge - sequentially remove the rubber circle, then the locking ring.
  3. Remove the casing.
  4. Remove the clamping ring.
  5. Remove the spring and balls.
  6. Disassemble the body, removing the rear part.
  7. Remove the front cover.
  8. Remove the gearbox together with the shaft, switching to the “jackhammer” mode.
  9. Carefully apply the composition to the entire mechanism
  10. Collect it using the reverse algorithm.

3

Thus, you need to immediately decide what to lubricate the hammer drill with. As a rule, formulations of the same brands are used for these purposes. You can also use universal products, for example, grease or Litol-24. Particularly difficult to work with is disassembling and assembling the gearbox. You need to work carefully so as not to damage the mechanism.
