After a long winter, all nature wakes up and begins to go wild. But the gardener has only problems - the grass grows by leaps and bounds. And not only on the site, but also on self-made lawns. A gasoline aerator was invented to “haircut” the area.

In our article we will look at what aerators exist, what their features are, and also provide a rating of lawn scarifiers, which includes the best models of this year. Let's begin!

Aerator or scarifier: which is better? What is a verkutter - let's understand the terminology

The difficulty is that even Wikipedia compares these concepts to one thing – a device for mowing a lawn. That's all! However, there are also differences that are worth mentioning.

The best aerators - what are they?

This gardening device is designed to enrich the soil with oxygen. The process is called aeration. The working part consists of needles and tubes, through which oxygen is supplied underground.

No one can tell you which aerator is better. We know one thing for sure - the device does not cost less than 100 thousand rubles. If you find something cheaper, most likely they just called it that, but in reality it is a scarifier.

Verticutter

This device is designed for cutting the top of the soil layer to get rid of roots, moss and other weeds. The working part consists of vertical knives. During operation, the earth is also saturated with oxygen, but this result cannot be compared with an aerator.

Scarifier

The device that we will now talk about performs the work of both the first and the second. Only instead of pipes and knives, he has wire tendrils. They look somewhat like a rake.

Such “rakes” pierce deep into the earth, but no more than a verticutter. It cuts the root system of the soil, which is why the lawn grows evenly and correctly. Ideal for homemade flower beds and lawns.

So, the difference between the three tools is that: an aerator - has tubes and saturates the soil with oxygen; verticutter – vertical knives; scarifier - tendrils for delicate lawn care.

First, let's look at the design of the aerator engine. By the type of motor you can tell what size lawn the machine can service:

  • Mechanical model - for a small lawn. The devices are produced in two versions: hand-held and foot-operated. The latter is worn on the feet, something like boots. Since the device is mechanical, additional physical strength is required to operate the tool.
  • For the same area, the rating of electric lawn aerators worked well. The electric motor has sufficient power to service a small area, and it is not afraid of power surges. Another plus is that it operates almost silently and does not emit toxic gases into the air. The downside is that the operating range is limited by the length of the network cable.
  • Gasoline vehicles are a mixture of power and mobility. They are more expensive than other formats, but can easily cope with even the most neglected areas. In addition, you can enjoy the delights of the device for much longer, since the parts are heavy and durable. A large tank lasts for several hours of productive lawn plowing.

Other characteristics that cannot be ignored when choosing an aerator

Depth of entry into the soil. If your future device cannot penetrate the ground more than 10 cm, it will be of little use. This is because some roots and weeds go deep underground by 30-50, or even a hundred centimeters.

An aerator is convenient when it combines a verticutter or scarifier. Just a few extra tines will make it easier to get the tubes under the soil and thoroughly till your lawn.

Some manufacturers produce models with adjustable knife depth. This can be done independently or with a button on the dashboard.

For large lawns, it is better to choose a machine with wide teeth. Think for yourself how much energy you will spend processing hundreds of meters with a narrow aerator.

The body can be made of plastic or metal. The second option is more reliable, but much more expensive than the usual one.

Rating of gasoline lawn aerators - which device to choose

Below we have presented a selection of devices that, in our humble opinion, every skilled gardener should purchase. If you have a large plot and a good budget, feel free to choose one of the options. You really can't go wrong!

  • Cub Cadet XC1 B40 (CC V 40 B)
  • Daewoo Power Products DSC 4000
  • Eurosystems SC42 B
  • Viking LB 540
  • MTD Optima 35 VO
  • PATRIOT SCG 212
  • STIHL RL540

As you can see, most of the devices in the aerator rating combine several devices, which we described at the beginning of the article. This is very convenient, because you don’t know exactly what might be useful this season and what will cause the most problems.
