Description and purpose of the device

A milling cutter is a device that is used to process wood, or less often metal or plastic. It is mainly used in workshops for finishing and repair work. If we talk about what a router is, it can be described as an electrical mechanism consisting of several elements:

Types of milling cutters

We can say about a router that it is a tool for processing wooden parts. For example, it can be used to prepare grooves or through holes with which to reliably connect workpieces.Today, quite a few models of the device are produced, they are classified according to different criteria. For example, depending on the design, the following devices are distinguished:

  • lamellar;
  • edge

An overhead router for wood, as the name suggests, is installed directly above the workpiece. A rotating cutter is fixed in the central part, making it convenient to hold the tool while working. If we talk about what a lamella-type milling machine is used for, then first of all we can highlight the production of locks and grooves. These elements are often used on flooring and lining.

Moreover, the lamellar device is highly specialized; it is not used for other tasks. Therefore, craftsmen often prefer to use upper tools, attaching them to the table. Thanks to double passage, it is possible to obtain a groove of the same quality as on a lamellar machine.

In the first case, the device is moved along relative to the workpiece, which lies motionless, fixed to the table. It’s clear why a router of this type is needed.It is used in home workshops to make various parts, joints and patterns.

In contrast, a stationary wood milling machine is a machine tool. In it, the cutter is fixed motionless, so during operation it is necessary to move the workpiece - this is done by the operator. Such equipment is used in professional workshops for creating holes, applying threads and many other tasks.

How to use a hand router

If we talk about what a manual wood router can do, then it is mainly designed to perform universal operations. The device is used for milling quarters, creating grooves, elements for joining and decorating. It is useful for creating an end, any hole, edge and other operations.

The advantage of such a device is that even a novice carpenter can master it. The general instructions are:

  1. Select a nozzle suitable in diameter and install it.
  2. Snap the shank into the chuck by a maximum of 2 cm.
  3. Set the router to the required depth.
  4. The adjustment knob is placed in the middle.
  5. Adjust the rotation speed controller. For example, if the nozzle is 4 cm, 10,000 rpm is sufficient.

Next, they do what a wood router can do. You can make holes, form poses, apply patterns. When working with the device, you must install a ruler-guide or use a pattern. To process various parts, narrow-end rulers are used. They are attached perpendicular to the workpiece.
