Heating radiator in an apartment: how to shut off and turn off, recommendations
There are several ways to shut off the heating radiator in an apartment. If you need to reduce the temperature, close only one tap, which is located below. But there are also cases when both valves are closed at once. How to do this so as not to harm the battery and heating system is described in detail in the presented material.

How to block it if it's hot
Most often, the question of how to shut off the battery arises due to the fact that the apartment is too hot. In this case, you can completely turn off the radiator in one or more rooms (but only if there are taps). In the normal position, both of them are open - the valves are located parallel to the pipes, as shown in the photo.
It is not difficult to understand how to shut off a heating radiator - just move the valve to a position perpendicular to the pipe. But it is extremely important to follow an important rule. It is strictly forbidden to close both taps at the same time. In this case, a vacuum gradually forms inside the battery and the pressure decreases. Therefore, after a few months, at best, it will become deformed, and at worst, it may crack, which will provoke an accident.
Obviously, only one tap needs to be closed. But it is not entirely clear how to shut off the battery in an apartment: from above or from below. There are 2 options:
- If the top tap is closed and the bottom tap is closed, this is an acceptable but undesirable option.The fact is that if repairs begin at the neighbors or throughout the house, the water from the circuit will be drained, the radiator will remain empty, which will provoke corrosion processes.
- From this it is clear how to turn off the radiators in an apartment: you need to turn off the tap from the bottom, and leave the top one in the same position. In just 1-1.5 hours, the surface of the battery will completely cool down and the room temperature will become comfortable.
The correct way to turn off the radiator in a room is shown in the photo. The upper valve remained parallel to the pipe, and the lower one stood across it. You need to do this all the way.
It is worth keeping in mind that the taps can be located in different ways:
- side connection (classic version);
- diagonal;
- lower.
But the way to properly shut off the heating radiator in an apartment remains the same - only close the lower valve, and leave the upper one in the open position. But in the case of a bottom connection, both taps are located at the bottom. In order not to get confused, the “upper” valve here should be understood as the one that stands on the supply pipe that flows into the riser (it is through it that hot water flows).
How to cover for the summer
It is recommended to turn off heating batteries in the summer, i.e. after the end of the season. In this case, close both taps, as shown in the photo. But as already mentioned, you cannot leave the radiator in this position for a long time. Therefore, it is advisable to track the date when utility services begin preparations for the heating season (see an advertisement at the entrance or call).
On the eve of this work, it is necessary to close both valves. When the water starts to gurgle, the taps are also left in the closed position.As soon as the characteristic sound ends, you should wait another 2 days, and then immediately open both taps or only the top one. This method of turning off the heating radiator for the summer allows you to ensure against clogging while flushing the entire circuit.
Thus, only the bottom valve can be closed - this allows you to completely disconnect the radiator from the heating and keep it in working condition. Simultaneous shutdown is allowed only in an emergency situation, as well as on the eve of work on flushing the system.
